What a great idea! It won't happen though. Not enough $ to be made on a phone that lasts.

I like it! I can remember arguing with my husband because I wanted a phone without a camera and he kept telling me they don't make them without cameras. Lol.

I like the idea of being able to customize the phone and I really like the idea of getting a phone to last and not adding to the electronic waste pile so much.

It's actually pretty amazing. Gives you a plethora of customization options. Now if they can tweak the thickness and make the screen a little bigger it would be perfect. If I was an investor i would definitely fund this project!

I think this must be a joke. Every component would need an individual consumer-duarble housing and individual connectors. Have you seen images of what goes on inside a modern smartphone? Some of the connections are like scotch tape and the components are manufactured to wrap around the battery. They don't even build cars & trucks without their own custom components anymore - they are designed to save weight and space.

I guess some of you have forgotten what smartphones were like with all those moving parts including creaky sliders and battery doors because they all have been pretty much discontinued.

Since this will never catch on with each and every manufacturer of every component, some company will have to source the individual components and build a box around them with custom connectors. Not only will the smartphone look like a brick but it will be about the size of one.

This is the dumbest idea ever. yes, let's upgrade the "speed" block to make my phone faster because all the parts are totally independent and things like "speed" aren't dependant on a variety of things. There's also the backplane which some how knows how to route all the signals regardless of where and how components are plugged in.

Let's not forget that have well made phones that can be resold (sometimes multiple times) is a good way to keep them out of landfills.

I thought it was cool at first too, but the more I thought about it, the less appealing it is. It's just not going to happen. I wouldn't actually buy it because it will take years for adequate support to be set up. Brand name and pride will be lost. And it's ugly lol. Being able to choose my case is enough customization for me thanks haha

LOL... there used to be a time when you could fix electronic devices by replacing parts. Now they don't even let us take the battery out.

What would make anyone think that manufacturers would be willing to go this route? It completely flies in the face of the modern consumer electronics business model.

Yes, neat concept. Too bad it won't work.

First, when you modularize that much, you have to package each module. That means creating a shell for each piece and connectors to tie them together. All of that adds complexity, size, and weight. I'd say this would triple the thickness and weight of a phone with absolutely no benefit in functionality. As well, the connections between the various pieces become multiple failure-points.

Even worse than all that, once a standard is established, it's inevitable that someone will come up with a bus design that won't work with it, and the whole platform would need to be redesigned.

It's a neat thought, but it isn't suppressed out of some weird conspiracy to keep cool stuff off the market. It's because what benefit there is wouldn't be worth the trade-offs for most customers.

great idea! i'd like to have one!
if they ever make it i'll buy one for sure.
and we can also imagine a smaller screen with physical keyboard block (and let's be mad:not only one choice of keyboard size!)
A modular phone with BB10 would be fantastic!
Imagine how many companies could product modular blocks for a modest sum!
If the price stay reasonable i'm sure they'd sell a lot of these phoneblocks.

    maybe a different basis...
you could easily imagine 2 or 3 different basis for 4" - 5" and even a "phablet" form about 6"
