I know not a single soul on Whatsapp. BBM still has 77M subscribers on BIS plus those who are now using it on a BB10 device, say another 3M (?) +/-

What's the point of this thread?

BlackBerry needs to open BBM to all devices or else it will be useless....

I already find it useless...its a fantastic tool but it's useless because it's not open ended...let's say BlackBerry share in smartphone market doubles even then only 10 percent people will have access to it...what's the point of communicator tool when 90 percent of the world cannot use it.. Most people using BlackBerry are also using what app now

I'd like for the platform to be available off of the handset, like gtalk is, so I can switch platforms as desired. They'll need to change it after Google releases their unified babel messaging.

I'm with the OP. Release BBM for Android, iOS and Windows Phone for a small monthly/yearly fee and leave it free for BlackBerry devices.

Now with competing devices people associate BlackBerry with something positive and may consider that the next smartphone could be a BlackBerry as well.

BlackBerry doesn't handle a lot of traffic through their NOC with more and more people switching away from legacy BlackBerry devices. BlackBerry should do something with their exclusive infrastructure.

But there is a problem with this: Carries also want their piece of the cake.

People have predicted BBM's death for years if it didn't go cross platform and yet here it is, bigger and stronger than ever. I use it exclusively and I don't know anyone with a BB who doesn't use it especially now it has voice (legacy and BB10 ) and video (BB10). To paraphrase Clements; "Reports of BBM's death are greatly exaggerated."

Interesting. I switched away and switched back ... and discovered I had 32 contacts on BBM still. The "recommend" feature on 10 helped grow it since. When BBM comes to PlayBook, it should grow even more.

Why would people pay for it when there are free services available?

I agree. If it went cross-platform, I don't think it would gain much traction unless it is offered for free.

Think about this way how successful would YouTube (acquired by Microsoft) be if it was only allowed to be used on Windows Phone?

BBM is by far and wide superior to Whatsapp and Facetime.
Every person who uses BBM knows this.
I don't think that BlackBerry should just jump on the bandwagon and sell off their proprietary software.
Apart from that fact Apple is notorious for hating to have to pay BlackBerry any licencing fees to use their patents, so what makes you think that this would be different?
I like having my BlackBerry that has different features that are unique to BB, if I wanted to be like everyone else, I could have gotten a Apple or Android

Maybe free to chat with other platforms, but all the video and sharing features remain usable only on a BlackBerry handset.

YouTube was available via pc before it was ever on a mobile device.
And if there's not an app, you'd use your browser. Comparing carrots and bananas

That statement is confusing since Google owns YouTube, however YouTube is also designed for advertising revenue where BBM is designed as a feature to sell BlackBerry phones.

I agree, but I'd like to communicate with all those other suckers using BBM still. Loading a bunch of other crappy software to communicate with them isn't ideal.

Ah! That makes more sense now. That product started kinda like whatsapp, then got purchased by MS. There have been a lot of changes that they made that people weren't too happy about, but it is still multiplatform. However, they also use it as a ad revenue generator, which I'm sure we wouldn't be happy about in BBM.
