Apple will open their first store tight in the city centre if Edinburgh (UK) tomorrow Saturday 18th October. Publicity has been very good for this in Scotland. I would love to see blackberry open stores worldwide. Any thoughts if possible or impossible for the future?

They tried this before. I believe they only have one or two locations still open. Unfortunately, they don't have the user base that they once did

I wonder if those stores are doing much business? Yes, I can see how expensive this would be at present for BlackBerry. Maybe for the future this could happen.

They have a store here in Mumbai as well. Got to see the very first demo passport here way before it was released.

Even those are expensive. In my edge-of-the-Bay-Area local mall, an area for a 10'x15' kiosk in the mall costs $1800/month, and that's JUST the floorspace. You still have to build the kiosk, staff it, pay for utilities, etc. Considering wages & benefits & training for the staff, plus a manager to keep track of everything, how many phones would a kiosk have to sell a month just to break even? A whole lot, that's how many. And given that BB currently has a single phone on the market, only available on a single carrier (officially, though it would work on T-Mo too), it would be really, really tough just to break even. Even with the Classic, you're still looking at only two phone models - not much of a lineup, even for a kiosk.

Plus, a kiosk couldn't really provide much in the way of repairs or exchanges - they simply wouldn't have the stock or the space for that.

It's a whole lot harder than most people realize - if it was viable, I'm sure BB would be doing it. Currently, they have stores in a handful of places around the world where it is still viable, but that ain't the US.

Why do you need a store to sell a handful of phones. BlackBerry really has nothing else for the consumer base.
