I noticed that I can register {or so it says} my phone thru the network information area within the About portion in the settings Menu.

I've never heard of this and was wondering what it's for.

Triggers the same type of "activation" when you first fired up the device and added a BBID, it tells BlackBerry to send over the service books for your device and connect to BlackBerry Services.
Generally you only need to use that option if your having issues related to your BlackBerry Service. (BBM, BlackBerry Protect, and the likes)

It's for registering your BlackBerry with a BIS or BES server.
