How does one determine which is the best version to update to (eg for 8830WE).

Is there a compelling reason to update from 4.2 to 4.6?

The "best" version is the one that works with the fewest number
of issues. I don't know if there is an official upgrade for the 8830, there is no "sticky" in the 8830 section.

There are plenty of reasons to upgrade the OS, (HTML email, vid
recorder, better browser, equalizer in media player, etc...) but
it is not a process that should be taken lightly

    4.5*

4.6 is the BlackBerry Bold OS.

OS4.5 has not been released for the 8830 yet. The current release is v4.2.2.196. One compelling reason not to install beta software is that it will void your warranty and is frequently buggy: that's why it's beta, not released. OK, that's two reasons...

Ok thanks for the info; I have 4.2.2.123. -- sounds like I'm best off staying where I am....... But where would one go to determine OS info etc?

.... And when is rim gonna get their update act in (apple) order!?!

The MOP that's linked in my sig takes you through the steps to find the current OS for your device. It's well worth doing to free up memory and gain familiarity with your device. I don't know what changed from .123 to .176, which my 8830 shipped with. I have since upgraded to .196. The MOP is great preparation for upgrading your OS when the time comes.

You can always check the "Stickys" at the top of each device section. The
    newest will always be there

I actually like the fact that they are taking their time. I'd rather have a
fully tested and properly functioning OS than one that was rushed to release.
