Blackberry & Earthquake
Hi,
There was an earthquake in north italy some days ago.
After each quake nobody was able to use any mobile service . BBM only worked.
How is it possible? - 06-01-2012, 11:22 AM #2
From:http://mashable.com/BBM, which can run on either a phone’s data connection or local Wi-Fi and uses unique wireless protocols, has gained a reputation for reliability and security. In the Chilean earthquake of 2010, and in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 in New York, it was the only service left standing. What's in a world? - 06-01-2012, 11:56 AM #3

BBM has come through in many disaster scenarios. Go BBM!
Why is it that when your contract commitment is up, the phone you always wanted is now old and the phone you now want won't be out until the next quarter?

Same thing happened during the DC quake. SMS messaging uses the control channels of the voice side of cellular service to operate. In a disaster situation, peoples first instinct is to check on loved ones by calling from a phone or sending txt messages. Everyone calling and/or txting at once jams up the network because networks are always oversubscribed and not designed to have everyone call at once. When this happens the control channels are also jammed and no text. BBM uses the data network and/or Internet to talk to the BIS to talk to other BBM users. It is very efficient and uses very little data compared to the other IM offerings. This allows it to work great in a disaster type situation where the voice is jammed up, but data, even if operating slowly or loaded, will still work. If the data networks go down then BBM wouldn't work either.
