BlackBerry Classic will be the Hottest selling device
- "Legacy OS diehards?" There's no such thing. That's like saying there a group of diehard PC users wanting MS to release a new version of MS-DOS. That's like saying there a group of portable music fans waiting for RCA to release a new 8-track tape player. That's like saying there's a group out there waiting for Sony to start selling CRT TVs again. That's like saying there's a group of car buffs waiting for Ford to release a newer version of the Model T.
I think you get my drift.
The Classic will be an utter failure. Why? It's $450 for something that was popular like 6-7 years ago. You can get a awesome Android phone $300, or less and you don't have to do that ridiculous sideloading to install apps. Sorry, but BlackBerry no longer has the brand recognition to charge a more for less.
They are people in certain markets who do not need or can not get faster networks and are still on cheap BIS plans. They are employees of corporations (mainly in Canada and UK) who are still using their 9900's because their company has not upgraded them. They are consumers and small business operators who will use their BBOS device to almost exclusively to e-mail and text. There are Curve owners and some Torch owners who will use their phone until it breaks. Lastly, there are owners who have long paid for their phone and are on cheap pay as you go contracts. My analogy would be folks who do not stream video but rather get their DVD's from the library or kiosks at their local grocery store.
Will they upgrade to a Classic ? I think the Classic will do fine as a 9900 replacement but a cheap but good all touch would sell as well or better and catch some "diehards" that want to stick with BlackBerry. New buyers look at the screen. A great screen like the Passport can sell phones and a great screen on an all touch with a moderate price tag would catch some more diehards.12-18-14 08:25 AMLike 3 - I think a nice enough screen with the keyboard and trackpad will attract BlackBerry users. You have to take into account the number of people who do not want an all touch phone. They want the keyboard and the passport may be a bit big for them.
I just had a conversation with one of my bosses. He's in his early 60's and was peer pressured into an iPhone a few months ago. He hates it (as we all knew he would) and wants to go back to a BlackBerry. He's coming from a Bold. He's seen the Passport but as he uses his phone mostly for phone calls (shocking, I know) and text and email he feels the Passport is a bit big. I told him about the classic and he is genuinely excited for it.
It doesn't really do anything for me. I'd rather not give up screen real estate to what is, for me, a redundancy. But there are many ppl in the older age group, like my boss, that may really like it.

Leaves us with the BBOS crowd, that basically disappeared over years already.
I therefore massively doubt that AT&T being on board would change a lot. The US is scorched earth for BlackBerry and the Classic isn't a consumer device anyhow....
And Z10 and Q10 didn't disappoint. Two years back Both these devices were in the infant stages with regard to the OS 10.2 and issues were there. The upgraded 10.2.1 and the 10.3 leak has certainly provided the much needed stability to the product line.

Disappointing sales (fire sale on the Z10 and the "10s of millions of Q10s sold" that T. Heins projected, never happened).
Disappointing ecosystem.
Disappointing hardware quality (double typing on the Q, random reboots on the Z).
And, for everyone who actually used a modern smartphone before, everything apart from the HUB was pretty much underwhelming.
it will only be a "best" seller because more carriers have adopted it. Even in BB happy Canada. Wind mobile, which doesn't carry any BB's admitted it will carry the Classic.
We all know the Passport blows the Classic away, but due to more carriers having the Classic, it for sure will be the better seller.
It's the least desired form factor in the market place, while having the least desired OS, being overpriced and having bad specs.
The Passport is at least something new, a perk that the Classic doesn't have going for it.
This is a bold prediction though, and I obviously have no numbers to back that up currently, as there are no numbers for the Classic I could use.
My gut feeling however, tells me that the potential market for the Passport is bigger than the one for the Classic.Last edited by MarsupilamiX; 12-18-14 at 11:38 PM.
12-18-14 11:25 PMLike 0 - Umm...yeah, AT&T has the exclusive on the Passport and it's still 3 months from release. You really think AT&T will push a phone like the Classic that has no profit margin? It's being sold at launch in Canada for $49 w/ 2 year contract. I hope it does great, I really do. Ultimately all I see is potentially a bunch of Bold users upgrading.MarsupilamiX likes this.12-18-14 11:58 PMLike 1

It doesn't really sound logical, that BlackBerry would not give ATT a rather good price, if they want their phones to even be mildly pushed.
Similarly specced phones retail for 120-250$ (more or less)...12-19-14 01:13 AMLike 0 - I will not discuss the Classic saleability like a consumer device. BBRY is completely focused in enterprise. They must be hoping to sell to the enterprise in lot along with BES12 package. So the sales graph will start low and start peaking in about 6 months to 1 year unlike any consumer targeted phone where the graph shall be normally reverse. I shall also track BES12 deployment to gauge the success of Classic.
On the OS7 hold outs, imo most of them are in developing countries and consumers. They will eventually migrate to Android though Z3 and its successor will also chug along.
The bizarre part is BES12 also supports OS7 devices. How this will enable JC to RIP OS7 and earlier device, BES, BIS and legacy services is beyond my imagination tho.MarsupilamiX likes this.12-19-14 05:03 AMLike 1 - BlackBerry Classic Outsold Passport at Launch - http://n4bb.com/blackberry-classic-o...ssport-launch/

Just a few months ago BB hired someone from the UK that was supposed to be someone new in charge of marketing and the likes, which was to include Chicago where I am from. So far, I have not seen anything different in terms of marketing and promoting. Just saying. I know everything takes time as they say12-19-14 11:48 AMLike 0 - The so called "push" will only be at the corporate level. AT&T and Verizon will have reps in major corporations trying to package BES12 upgrade with new Classics.
However, if you enter a consumer store you will probably still get an iPhone or Android shoved down your throat.
Assuming the strategy works and corporations using BBOS7 with Bolds or BYOD w/ iPhones and Android convert to Classics that will be enough to drive $$$ to jump start BlackBerry which is ultimately the plan.LuvULongTime likes this.12-19-14 12:31 PMLike 1 - Colour me unimpressed. I looked and the Classic at a Bell store today. The build quality is not close to the passport OR the Bold 9900. Where is the classy shiny stainless steel rim. The trackpad is this little raised "nub". My 9900 has a smooth larger lit up track pad. They go to all that trouble to make a belt and it is no where as nice to use as the 9900. The back seems very cheap as well. I was left with the impression that here is just a cut rate corporate / enterprise device - perhaps a step up from a Q5. My hopes were dashed.
The Passport is so nice . It really can hold its own at the top tier of devices. I don't understand why BlackBerry can not make an all touch device with a quality screen and build quality of the Passport. It is clear that John Chen does not know phones or he would have demanded a better device than the Classic.
I thought it had a silver stainless rim? All the pictures and videos show that it has.12-19-14 01:00 PMLike 0 - I'm sure the BlackBerry Classic will do well!

Once you go black, you can't turn back! Posted via CB1012-19-14 06:40 PMLike 0 - Lol with every new release everyone wants to paint themselves in a corner and say "This will be the hottest selling device."
First the Z10 "It will kill the iPhone."
Then the Q10 - "Well the Z10 didn't do it because it didn't have a qwerty keyboard, THIS device will be the hottest seller."
Then the Z30 - "This is the ONE!! The Z10 didn't appeal to the users wanting a large screen and a bigger battery, it will without a doubt be the hottest seller ever!"
Then the Q5 - "BB has a huge market wanting a lower cost BB, this phone is going to sell like crazy!"
Then the Z3 - "The Middle Eastern market loves BB, the sales are going to go through the roof!"
Then the Passport - "It will sell 1,000,000 at launch, this is going to be BB's best seller ever!"
Now its the Classic - "Even though we've all said that buttons are outdated on a phone and no one wants them, we weren't talking about the toolbelt crowd that will flock to it, its going to be THE BIGGEST SELLER IN HISTORY!!"
Let BB worry about sales numbers. They themselves have said they are just trying to find a niche audience and are just now regaining their identity. If the Classic doesn't perform, I guess they will try again, but the constant "This device is going to be the biggest seller ever" threads with every new release has reached comedy at this point.Last edited by donnation; 12-20-14 at 05:43 AM.

I'm getting a white Classic because I always wanted the white 9900 and this is as close as I'll ever get. However I'll have loads of fun watching the button hating crowd trip over themselves rationalising this one. LOL!!!
