    Hello,
I was recently looking at how cheap the legendary BlackBerry 900's are on ebay. I've never owned one, and the leather back and trackball are so cool in my eyes, it was Blackberry's heyday after all.
So, do you guys think a 9000 would be a suitable backup? Obviously not for apps or anything, but just as a phone?

    Thanks!

I would not buy the bold 9000. It wasn't a reliable phone for me. There's issues with the track ball and loose leather back cover. I would go for the 9700/9780 or the best bold I had was the 9900.

    I'd go to a 9900 but not a 9000 again.

I have to agree. I loved my Bold 9000... But it had its share of issues. Call failed problems. The screen distorting when depressing the volume keys. Dead pixels. The loose battery door. Track ball fun. Dead keys. Reception issues.

I would still love to have one, for nostalgia sake... But I wouldn't really consider it a reliable backup phone.

I loved the 9000, still the best legacy device to date imo. 9900 sucked in comparison.

I would definitely chose the 9900 instead of the 9000.

Haha thanks for the responses, I went with a 9000 with a new battery and sim adapter for $31 total. Doesn't seem too bad of an investment if it gets trackball issues, and now I can say I owned a 9000! Lol my brother has my old 9900 so I'll steal it back from him if I need.

I could see the 9000 being just fine for communication, and it's cheaper to buy than the 9900....but my only complaint when I had the 9000 was the constant memory leaks...which I guess is fine also if you just use maybe 3 apps. My all time favorite os 5 device was the 8900.

I just recently bought the 9000. Couldn't be more than a month ago. I bought it for kicks. I always wanted the 9000 but I was on Verizon at the time it was released so I never had the option. I love it. Its used but everything works perfectly and as it should. I wouldn't say you could use it as a backup since the Sim cards are different sizes but if you REALLY needed it, I'm sure it would do well for you. Just forget about the browser. The experience is slow and painful. Nostalgic purchase of course. If anything get the 9900.

When is BlackBerry going to shut down BIS? That is really going to be the question with the legacy devices because when that happens they become data less talk/sms handsets only.

Beat me to it. Once BIS is shutdown legacy phones go with it I'm assuming.

Sure it would work as a backup but the trackball is problematic. As Blaze said the 9900 would be a better choice. It has better specs, and optical pad.

I still have my 9000 though. It's a pile of junk by today's standards but I still get a warm feeling when I see it lol.
