My friend unlocked a Rogers z10 of mine, ditched his iphone 4 and now is using the z10 on the Bell network. The satisfaction he got from breaking free from the grips of Apple and the carriers was surprising. Just the fact that he is now in control of his cell device is huge to him. If Bell doesn't give him value for his money, he is free to go elsewhere. This could be a huge trend!

Makes sense. BlackBerry is getting a 3rd party to deal with issues related to supply chain management and resellers. I'm not sure how this will impact large carrier relationship.

Does anyone know who ingram micro's retail partners are? Just wondering where we will end up seeing these unlocked phones for sale.

Fantastic. I'm looking forward to being able to walk into a store, but a phone and not have to deal with any carrier pressure at all.

Hopefully they cook up something similar for the US?

Doesn't have to be thousands of outlets, but at least one in each state or at the minimum in big cities.

Not only that, it lessens the chance that some iGoof employee following his carriers agenda and try to steer you to an iphone instead because "everyone has one" and he makes more commission on that and pads the carriers numbers.

The market did not react well to this deal unfortunately, but who cares about that :P. What really matters is getting the phones into people's hands, and if the carriers are not going to help you need to find a different way.

So what does this mean in terms of OS updates (if anything)? Can Blackberry push the updates directly to the devices? or are they still reliant on the carriers? My guess is the latter, but i'm always open for an early Christmas gift.

My carrier Umobile (malaysia) didn't carry the passport but when I press checked software update, I get the 10.3.0.1418 update

Ingram Micro does not sell to consumers or directly to business unless they are resellers. Ingram Micro is a distributor. In other words they will be supplying Telus and other Canadian carriers.

And to further add to this Digital River specializes in online shopping cart services.

Just expect those relationships to be inexistant in "developed" nations by now.
Would be my guess at least.

Just think of how cheaper and less frustrated will be. Push update to client and end of story.
