BIS stands for Blackberry Internet Service. This is a service from your provider that lets you receive email and access the internet on personal Blackberries. You also need a data plan so you can receive email. The best plan is the unlimited one for $29.99.
You can create an account here. This is where you set up your email

You would need to have BIS access before you can do that so make sure you've added the blackberry data plan to your line first!

There are a lot of BB features that aren't explained in the instruction books.

This would be a good place to start when it comes to BIS.
