What ended up happening to it
Maybe........
I gotta say that I have not been so nice to my 9810. I've dropped it, kicked it, knocked it off a table, it went flying out of my coat pocket and skidding across the street. I've been really hard on this phone... with all of that, aside from a few scratches and dings, the phone has held up spectacularly. For sure, it is one rugged tank of a phone.
Some may find my premise laughable, and I may be a bit biased...but the build quality of the 9550 is actually pretty exceptional. I first found the metal backplate to be quite annoying to remove but I came to love how solid it made the phone feel as a whole. It adds an industrially beautiful aesthetic to the handset. Is it the best BlackBerry? No, not by a longshot. But I would definitely put it on the list of one of the most durable.
If we're talking about durability in the sense as to what can best stand the test of time, well I think most could agree that the 8330 was quite the workhorse and if they still had their old one, it would very likely still work.
just my two cents.
It's still alive and kicking. Returned to VZW after I got my 9930 at my normal upgrade time.
That thing did NOT die. I thought I'd killed it once, but after a couple of battery pulls it came back just fine.

I had a similar experience with my Torch. They are anks...
SOME very slight creaking and wobbliness on the sides of the top part, but I think that was normal.
My ex dropped his walking out of the AT&T store the day we got them, I was horrified. But nothing.

I concur.
The 97xx series is very durable! Just has a special build quality that is built to last!
I use a 9930 now and it is durable, but I feel if I drop it enough times, something will break.
Lets not take this "Crazy Train" too far off the rails folks, remember we are in GD NOT OT! ;) Carry on. :)
That's exactly my impression. I think because it's so sleek?

I have about 200 of the 8700s lying around waiting for the recycle truck to come! lol
THAT was the first BB I loved. Agter that I got the 8800WE and then I was addicted. First personal BB was the 8310. RED.
I have had a BB in my hand since 2004.:p

Mine started a bit earlier, I used the 950 for a while (its boxed up somewhere in my house still lol), and really got hooked with the 5810 device. It was so much more than the other devices of the day hah.
My guess would be YES. Reminds me of some CSI Los Vegas episodes with Grissom and Lady Heather. lol To stay on topic, I have dropped my 9810 a few times, with no ill effects, and I have no idea about the abuse it took before I got it off ebay, but the case is a bit chipped. A solid phone.
