I've decided I will never give up BB10 and am happy with my Z30. However, there are times when i would really really like specific Google Play apps that I just can't install on my Z30 no matter what (example: Sait's Saitsa app and Calgary Transit's apps). I figure that a small dirt-cheap 7" tablet would work pretty well for the odd tasks I need it for. gaming is not an issue as I'll get my games from BBW or Amazon and I have a laptop and Z30 for media consumption, but I do need native Google Play services and 100% compatibility which rules out the new Amazon tablets. I can use my Blackberry's hotspot when required.

I have been considering something like this I think will work, but I don't know how functional a tablet at this range is or how well it'll be supported. I'll probably install a few apps and customize it a bit, but off the top of my head nothing that would strain it.

    Thoughts?

Agreed. If you're just looking to save some money, you'll definitely stretch your dollar further by purchasing a used tablet.

The wife and I purchased an older Samsung Note tablet for under $100 and it works great.

A high-end tablet from one or two years ago will probably have better specs and overall quality than the cheaper new ones that you will find.

Look for a Samsung Tab Pro 8.4 through Best Buy. It's Android, but a great tablet. Research it's specifications vs. Others and cost.

Get the 2013 nexus 7. Great little machine and you can wet your feet on Android customization with it without compromising your precious BlackBerry daily driver.

Android tablets (devices in general) are also VERY simple to build while repurposing products otherwise labeled as waste... An excellent DIY opportunity awaits and you can build a premium device for next to nothing... Android is very versatile and pliable, why put it in the hands of some random manufacturer when you can build one to your tastes just as easily and for a fraction of the cost?

I'd second the Nexus 7 or Samsung Tab Pro 8.4. I also really like the Samsung Tab Pro 10.1. I picked one up for cheap for my kids to play on and its a solid tablet and we've never had any issues with it. Depends on the size of screen you want but you can find refurbished 10.1 Samsung Tab pro's on Amazon for less than $250.

Just a note. I would not be afraid of a refurbished unit from a reputable dealer. Sometimes they are better than the original as whatever was wrong with it was fixed!! :-).

Thanks for the advice, I'm looking on Kijiji for some dirt cheap name brands. I'm problably going to get an old Asus memo HD7 and install AOSP on it. I really only need it for random apps like the Calgary Transit app, so I'm fine with a cheap one.

Great choice. A decent Android tablet i've been using for nearly 2 years. It's basically a cheaper version of the 2012 Nexus 7.
