    (I am not a techy) ...

    BES sucks.

    Really.
You really need to stop trying to be right here. Really. Your IT dept sucks, not BES.

I really only have one thing to say here. Judging by the way you talk robbie, you are not a very understanding person. Meaning you are younger. Dont take this as a personal attack but it sounds to me as if your IT, and company DONT want you using these capabilities through your WORK provided phone. They can tell you anything the want, doesnt mean in the background they arent saying exactly the opposite. I think if you need a personal calendar that your wife can see maybe try google calendars. It was a nice attempt to bash bes but I am sure you are a dual identity of someone here at this site that talks just like you, but this thread just SUCKS

    HAVE A NICE DAY

Of course! If all else fails, try a personal attack. My IT department sucks, I am young AND not understanding. Still, the replies on my initial questions were:

    - it does not synchronize because it can not synchronize
    - it does not synchronize because it should not synchronize
    - it can synchronize
    - it should synchronize if you delete books
    - the BB deskop is not supposed to work, when you have BES
    - the BB desktop is supposed to work. Always.

This probably means that BES is not so clear on the question if its possible to synchronize my calender and address book at home, as is possible with windows, google, plaxo and so many other products?

It is probably not. I get conflicting answers here, and find various possibilities to do it with 3rd party applications, none of which work as simple as under windows.

And if it IS possible, I am sure there is a manual or something where it is written HOW.

Logic and reasoning doesn't seem to convince you that this a BES administration issue specific to your IT dept. Your IT dept's inability to properly set up their BES is a fact (you mentioned you got the OK to try a workaround for a BES security policy, wtf?). It is not a personal attack on you at all.

It is possible, just not by you but rather your IT dept. If you manage to get it to work, it'll be a very kludgy and unreliable solution.

Thank you. That is very helpful. Do you happen to know what permission needs to be set, and where they can find it? I will leave an anonymous message to tell them.

Personally I work for a very large organization, and recently was injured and forced to take some extended SIQ. My work BB is very locked down but it is the only way I can get my email and reply to work addresses. BES is my life line for the most part. Is it a pain in the *** to have two blackberries, one for personal and one for work... absolutely not.

In a nut shell my advise to you is to go out and buy a personal phone.

Yes, I understand now. The only way to work around BES is to do use my calendar and contacts from a personal phone. This is the only way I can use my own agenda and phone numbers. BES sucks too much to work with.

You fail to see the point of BES, but that is fine. The company you work for does and thats what matters.

Yes. It probably does, even though some of the BB moguls here think they suck at their job. I can download google maps, LogicMail, Youtube, Flickr, Facebook, twitter, MSN, streaming radio stations and all sort of other fun apps for free, watch porn, listen to great music, chat nonsense and all on the expense of my company.

    All this is possible!

    It's a great invention!

On the other hand, it is impossible to keep a decent quality of addresses and agenda in such a way that doesn't duplicate or mangle information, OR that I have to give out the password to my web-based agenda and adress book to my wife, or access my own information through the company system, OR buy another phone so at least I can keep my agenda with me. Maybe I should put my password on my facebook too, for added "usefullness"?

And all this, according to some participants in this more and more humorous discussion, out of gratitude that I can use a fantastic piece of machinery called a BlackBerry. That is stable, beautiful and the object of envy when I casually put it on the table during meetings and smile at it. Because it is a BlackBerry. Which is cool.

That has BES which makes it possible for my IT-staff to read all my mails and reset it from whereever when I am whereever.

But which doesn't have the functionality I need to perform better.

For instance: to use and keep the 2000+ adresses I collected over the past years which happens to be some of my added value to the company.

For instance: to exchange information on my whereabouts with my wife, which makes my life better, because we don't have to spend an hour each sunday discussing my agenda for the week, and I don't have to call her everytime I have to go to work a bit earlier or later.

Or for my wife to make an appointment for me or tell me she needs the car or remind me we go to the theater or to put aanother reminder in my agenda ("don't forget to pick up the kids! you have a busy schedule, but the kids need to be picked up!").

You know, I have a busy job. And my agenda changes the whole time. And I don't want to have to call home everytime the possibility arises that I need to make an evening appointment. Because that sucks.

And also, sometimes, someone changes his telephone number. And I don't want to remember who changed his number because I need to change it twice; once in my home system and once in my lovely BlackBerry. Because that sucks.

But all this is not possible.

    Which sucks.

    BES sucks.

    Much.

Your IT dept can kill all of that very easily...don't blame BES.

Your IT dept can resolve this...don't blame BES.

They have every legal right to read the company's BES emails, they don't belong to you.

Your IT dept can resolve this, don't blame BES. Meanwhile take a look at Cozi, an online calendar which syncs with outlook and has a mobile app. No BB app yet, but it's under developement.

You know, I have a busy job. And my agenda changes the whole time. And I don't want to have to call home everytime the possibility arises that I need to make an evening appointment. Because that sucks.

You already stated that you are not a tech person, so drop it already.

edit: To be more kind...Your usability issues are definitely valid. However, BES can be configured at one shop to be brilliant and something everyone adores. It can also be configured at another shop to be stupid and hated.

I think you're missing the point of BES entirely.

BES, from my understanding is a very powerful tool that can be configured by each organisation to allow / dissallow exactly what they want.

Your company has chosen to configure BES to be of maximum benefit to them. It's a company phone after all on a company BES and therefore syncs your company contacts, calendar and email to your company computer. Your personal life organisation is not the responsibility of the company you work for so they can rightly so chose to disallow syncing of your personal contacts and calendars to your personal phone.

Others have suggested to you googlesync and funambol as ways to sync your calendar and contacts but you've chosen to continue your rant against BES.

I've read this thread with varying degrees of humour which the more you post has turned to disbelief.

Your company provides a tool (Blackberry) and backup (BES) for you to function well for them. If, which they are entitled to do, they've chosen to configure their BES to control your phone and not allow it to sync your personal agenda get yourself a second phone.

Most importantly, get over yourself. The world doesn't revolve around you!

Robbie: the easiest thing for you to do for your calendar is set up a google calendar account and do a one way sync from your outlook to google calendar. Then share your google calendar with your wife. However I am guessing that the bulk of your calendar entries are marked as private so she won't know what you are doing but she can at least see you are busy.

Give this guy a break, it obviously doesn't work for him.
I just got my head around google sync and it works perfectly. I would suggest give that a try but start with a clean gmail account, erase all contacts and the calendar before you start using it as you'll end up with multiple contacts.
I would say this is the way to go and it's a two way sync. It will sync anything that's not marked as private.
I'm using it with mycallslog app and it works like a charm.
