Is pulling the battery with the power ON akin to hitting the "off" button on your laptop PC w/o going through the proper shut down (ie, log off, end, etc).

Is it better to pull the battery with the power on or to first turn the power off, then pull the battery?

No. It's not like your PC. Pull the battery with your power on. Leave it out for about 30 seconds.

You can generally get the same results with a hard reset. Once in a blue moon, pulling a battery will fry a device, it doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Don't get me wrong, I'll pull a bat myself for a serious problem.
Soft Reset for a Curve: press alt>right shift>delete keys at the same time.

Hard Reset: press the alt>right shift>delete keys again after the BlackBerry's screen lights up after the first reset.

It's the same for all BB's with full QWERTY keyboards, so yes.

No, but you can download and install the Soft Reset app.
There is both a desktop install link and one for OTA (from your phone browser)
