I had been using Universal Search for more than six months and recently switched back to keyboard shortcuts. I'm not sure -- it may be my imagination -- but I think battery life is better when keyboard shortcuts are enabled on the home screen rather than Universal Search.

I'm not so sure about battery life but reducing the criteria in Universal Search certainly helped with free memory when running OS6.

I guess it could help with the battery drain too.
