At $100 it was way too expensive for something that wasn't much louder than many peoples smartphones.

At $12.99 it isn't a bad price for a clip on portable speaker. But if you want something to play music out by the pool or while at the beach.... you'll need something else as this thing doesn't have much volume or range.
Have you ever actually owned one? The range and volume are both excellent. Judging by your statement that it isn't much louder than many peoples smartphones, my guess is no.

To the OP, thanks for bringing this up, I had begun to take it for granted.

Picked up 2 of these myself the other day off amazon.
1 wouldn't charge, so I need to send it back. Amazon overnight 'ed me a new one.
Used it for a bit at work today so far as my personal soundtrack machine and I have no complaints.
I even got a few wow's from people. Especially after I told them the price.

Received mine today. I plan to hook this up to my speakers using the audio out and just use it as a bluetooth receiver. I may take it out to the beach once in a while too.

Initial impression is that it has pretty good audio quality and decent volume. But the overall build quality isn't great. The center button in between the volume up/down is already sunken in after one pairing.

I think someone mentioned that this was $100 at one point in time? Definitely not worth over $20. At current prices it is a decent deal plus I was surprised that it came with a 3.5mm cable and charger in the box.

Also one other thing, this product must be quite old because it says Research in Motion on the label. Not that it matters.

Better than the Z10s sound quality and volume. Probably about on par with the Z30s...

Got my first one in the mail today, using it as I type, nice sound for a small speaker. Waiting for 3 more to arrive.

Well, this device has been a joy to use. I don't have Bluetooth in my car so I use it for a hands free device for phone calls. Slipped onto the seat belt, it's perfect.

    Great score.

It was released alongside the Z10 I believe. And yes, brand new it was over $100. I think we all remember how ridiculous initial BB10 pricing was. It's no surprise that nobody bought it.
