Standby (hitting mute key) is the same as standby on a computer?

Powering down by holding the End key or by the button in applications is the same as hibernation on a computer?

Battery pull is actually a true power down (the rude way, lol)?

The reason why I assume this is because when I tried powering down by holding the End/Power button, it acted like it turned off but when I turned it back on, it didn't load the same way as it does when apps are installed or the battery had been pulled. And it didn't take nearly as long.

I believe what you are assuming is true but I may be wrong.

You are correct in both your assumptions. Powering the phone off
puts it in to a "low power cycle standby" which like your computer
is why when you bring it out of this state you get to a desktop
    almost instantly.

The only way to truly power it off is to, well, remove the power
source. In this case, that is the battery. And like your computer,
when you do this and re-power the device it has to go through
    the entire boot process.

ok. Now, when I put my BB in standby I can still recieve msgs and calls. Does this also apply to 'powering down' since it's not really powered off?

If you go into standby you will still be able to get calls and messages.
If you power the phone off, the radio (the thing that makes it possible to
send and receive messages and calls) will also be off, therefore the answer is no.
