Here's a new idea to drive sales: The Q10 and Z10 should have no activation fees! It would be advertised as "No activation fees, courtesy of BlackBerry". Or spot the new owner an equivalent credit in BlackBerry World.

I disagree. Mainly since this is something that is driven by the carriers, and I always argue that with them. I hate the activation fee...

Carriers will find a way to charge you the activation fee anyway; they'll just name it something else.

Isn't the goal of driving sales to increase revenue? And wouldn't BlackBerry paying the $35 dollar activation fee (in U.S.) for all customers be like... throwing away money? I can see the BGR headlines now: "BlackBerry Desperately Offering To Pay Activation Fees On New BB10 Devices."

Let's not give them any fuel to write sh1t like that. They seem to be doing a great job of coming up with titles like that on their own.

The $35 that BlackBerry would spend per unit would come from a marketing budget. I do see your point about giving the press fodder. But I'm thinking in terms of a customer who is on the fence about purchasing a BlackBerry 10 product. It would be an incentive.

I have never paid rogers an activation fee.
I always argue and they waive it.

BlackBerry already gives carriers bulk discounts. Giving them more discounts would cut into their margins.

Actually it should be done away with. The carriers are seeing some record profits. This is only fueled by greed.

I think BlackBerry's marketing budget would be better spent on good commercials like the "Space Age Technology In The Palm Of Your Hand" video, to show people their devices, so they're willing to buy the device in the first place.

We don't have activation fees on any of our carriers in Australia.
