BlackBerry, being in the position that they're in, HAS to release a device that offers cutting edge, off the charts specs in order for non-bb users to take notice. Sadly, perception is reality when it comes to mobile devices so even though BB10 doesn't require this or that to function optimally, it needs the specs to grab the attention and push the brand in a positive light.

I'm a very loyal BB user so I "get" what they are offering but it's the on the fence buyers or iPhone or Android loyalists that we need to change the perception with. Until then, BB will always have a negative rap and haters will just make stuff up because they can and the hate......becomes the reality.
Not really sure how they are gonna change that perception though (devices or OS were never problem with new BB) but if their "partners" keep telling customers to choose iphone or android over BB because they are apparently going down, well regular Joe would not think twice. Especially those who never tried BB10 before. When users buy a phones they are also considering resale value after that, at least that's what I do. If they check price of the BB on kijiji or ebay, they will see that resale value is waaay lower then what they are paying to a carriers. That right there may drive them away to get it. Sadly this works for me as I really like BB10 and buy it cheap now these days.

Of course not, this is BlackBerry.

You can expect it 3-5 years after it becomes a standard.

In the meantime, "it's not necessary , (whatever resolution we're on) is just fine and (x crackberry user) can't tell the difference between one and the other".

    BlackBerry 101 - Help Channel
Like BlackBerry has shown in the past and present when it comes to technology they only use whatever allows them to get by, they aren't like Samsung or other smartphone manufactures you build the the devices with far better technology. I would say BlackBerry won't adopt this technology until the next generation after this technology becomes a standard.

I don't see the point of such resolution on a 5" screen! If you have a 60" screen then I would say yes that resolution will make a big difference from 1080p. But for a 5" screen absolutely a waste and you will not be able to see a difference at all. The spec game war is getting out of control. I think 1080p is just fine for 5" screen.

Unless you hold your 5" phone 6" away from your face, there is no reason to go beyond 1080p. At one foot viewing distance, 1080p makes sense and most can tell the difference between that and 720p.

Yes i can tell between a 1080p screen and a 720p screen, its not a world of a difference but its there. Now 1440p vs 1080p? I dont think 90 percent of the world would notice.

All while those customers get entrenched in App and Media ecosystems of the competitors! It cost much more to win a customer back than to keep them and BlackBerry is investing in neither.

Such a pixel density is beyond insane. To notice the difference, you’d have to put the phone right in front of your eyes. That can’t be healthy, neither for your eyes nor your battery life.

Oh sure, they would notice. The people who have nothing to do but sit in a dark room looking at specifications all day would notice.

The rest of us are just out in the world using and enjoying our "horribly underpowered" smartphones.

1080p is more than enough. I dont get this crazy spec munching madness. Even android phones are slowing down in the specs department with each new launch.

I dont think most smartphone users of today till end of 2015 need anything more than quad core cpu and gpu, 2gb ram, 1080p and a 5 inch 350-400dpi screen.

No app developer would make any app which is only supported by octo core processors and consume vast amount of resources because then they would severely limit their adoption rate.

The only things I think smartphone makers should really concentrate on are camera tech, storage memory and battery life.

Its all about the value add or "gimmicks" now. Heart beat monitors, thumbprint readers, water/drop proofing, curved screens, that M8 dotted screen thing.

Diminishing returns this spec war is.

I said the opportunity was there.. and they need to take advantage of it.. didn't comment on the extent to which they are..

FTR unless you're on the inside, you don't know how much their doing to do both, you can only comment on what you see that comes out on the outside, and even if that's little or that's a lot it doesn't tell you how much went in.. so it *doesnt look like* blackberry is investing in neither..

Internal devise storage is a highly lucrative business taken advantage off, so I don't see we'll see changes there anytime soon, a lot of profit is made from that alone by e.g. Apple (but not alone)

Yeap that and paid cloud storage. Id like to see improvements but im not banking on it. Anyone who includes an SD card slot is considered generous to me.

Apple has no problem selling MacBook Air's with the non retina screen. I own one. And when I went shopping around, every PC had a retina screen, yet I still chose the macbook air even though it had a lower quality screen.

For me, the sum of all its other parts of the MB Air, was more appealing to me than having a retina style display. This is how I view the Z30.

The next rumored flagship the Q30 is supposed to have between a 4 to 5 inch screen at 1440 x 1440 dpi.

Thats 400 dpi if its 5 inch and 500 if its 4. I think thats plenty.
