1080p Phone Screens coming soon
Should this affect BlackBerry 10 at all? Do BlackBerry supporters want this? I know that when my update is due (sadly) near the end of 2013 I would enjoy seeing a BB10 phone with a 1080p screen.

The 1080p screens are to be on Android phones.

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
Beyond a certain resolution, this escalation in specs is getting silly IMO. On a 5 inch screen, can the human eye even tell the difference between 720p and 1080p?
Instead of increasing resolution, engineering efforts should be focused on reducing the power consumption of screens. Now that's a spec war I can get behind. - 11-11-2012, 11:43 AM #4
Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
1080p on something so small is useless IMHO. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should!

Agreed. There have already been studies by display specialist (I think it was the Display Mate people) that determined that the human eye can't resolve the difference beyond a certain ppi level, even when looking at screens on the phones placed as close as we tend to do. It's pointless when there are other areas manufacturers should focus on.

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
Before people start convincing other people 1080p screens being useless.
I'd like to see it in person before I make my judgement. I think a 440ppi would make a huge difference between a 350ppi display.
I could be wrong though. - 11-11-2012, 02:01 PM #7
Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
As others have said, the difference would most likely not be discernible given the screen size. However, I'm sure it would be a decent, if not a good marketing ploy...

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
android devices have to put all their money into hardware, there is nothign to differenciate themselves since the OS is the same, 1080p is useless on a smartphone but it is what it is and its specs that will likely sell products. the average consumer won't say whats the point to 1080p on a 5 inch screen they will say "oooohhhh wow i can have a phone with 1080p HD resolution" noth even concerning themselves with the fact that it will look the same, the same way a quadcore vs dual core spec will when in some ways the quad may be slower

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
it all depends how far you are from the screen. the closer you are the more you can see the distortion, just look at a full 1080p TV, if you're a few feet away you can see the blotching but sit back 15 feet away and its perfect, but in a case for smartphones with the desity they have and the size of the screen even a few inches won't matter, even a few inches away from the screen on my 9900 at 285ppi i still can't even see blotching

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
Adding to what was said above having 1080p pretty much assures the battery drains even faster. I'd be happy with 720 for screen and 1080p HDMI out because that's where you really need it.

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
It's a spec competition that's all it is. I mean even the Note I and II are ridiculous, but they work for a lot of people. I guess size really does matter....competition wise.

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
All this new tech in stuff like screen....well I wish they'd finally have a break through in battery tech. Gonna need it to power a 5" screen that's 1080p lol. I would like to compare a 720p screen to a 1080p screen before I make my decision as well but I have a feeling that reviews are gonna say that you can't really tell the difference

1080p Phone Screens coming soon
The continued escalation of screen sizes on so called pocket size smartphones is also silly. It's all about money and duping the consumer: Like putting an 80 inch tv (screen size) in a small apartment where a 46 inch could suffice. As long as it's selling, what the heck....

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
I have a feeling reviews are going to say it's a beautiful display being 440 ppi. Having a 720p screen in 5" or even 4.7" for example, would drop the ppi below 326ppi.
I don't know why people are saying it's not worth it. I'd like to have a 1080p screen on my phone. It would make the image and screen so much more sharper. - 11-12-2012, 01:28 PM #16
Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
Check out this article, and let me know if you guys agree.
Or if 326ppi is still the best we'll need.
Does the “Retina Display” live up to its name? | Word Munger
How many pixels are needed to match the resolution of the human eye? Each pixel must appear no larger than 0.3 arc-minute. Consider a 20 x 13.3-inch print viewed at 20 inches. The print subtends an angle of 53 x 35.3 degrees, thus requiring 53*60/.3 = 10600 x 35*60/.3 = 7000 pixels, for a total of ~74 megapixels to show detail at the limits of human visual acuity.
The 10600 pixels over 20 inches corresponds to 530 pixels per inch.
Aha! Not 326 ppi, but 530, at a distance of 20 inches! But who holds their iphone 20 inches away? I’d submit that many of us hold it only 10 inches away. This means that to achieve the highest resolution discernible by the human eye, the iPhone would need a resolution of 1060 ppi, or roughly 3200 X 2100 pixels! My 23-inch iMac has a resolution of just 1920 X 1200. So if you could shrink my computer display to the size of an iPhone display, you’d still need to triple its resolution to match the perceptual power of the human retina. - 11-12-2012, 09:20 PM

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
Seems to make sense. I agree though that 1080p would be nice, if battery could be managed properly. BB10 will be the best in experience but I wouldn't mind some impressive hardware either

Re: 1080p Phone Screens coming soon
My 42inch screen tv is 1080p, and I sit at about 8 feet (96 inches) away.
To get the same "clarity" on my phone, given that I am usually about 1 feet away from the screen of my phone, then the smallest screen that would need a 1080p resolution would be 5.25inches.
Any screen that is smaller than 5.25inches and has 1080p would seem clearer than a 1080p 42inch tv at a distance of 8 feet.
So from these simple calculations, it's really just a "nice to have" feature.
The BB 10 which will have a screen size of around 4.2" and a resolution of 720p.
BB10 | 4.2inch screen | 720p | Distance of 1.25 feet away
Will look as good as as:
Other Phone | 5.25 inches screen | 1080p| Distance of 1 feet away
Distance of 1.25 feet away seems far? Not really, sitting at your desk with the phone in your hands resting on the desk is around 1-1.25 feet.
Bottom line. 1080p is not unrealistic, but for the Blackberry users who want a BB for productivity, email, messaging, browser, casual games, a 720p screen is just fine.

After 300 ppi no naked eye can even tell the difference, if you want to be the guy carrying the highest spec phone then Android is your only choice. BB10 and iPhones are a perfect marriage beween HW and SW because RIM and Apple are in the contol of both and greater performance can be achieved because of this. And besides that RIM can not be profitable as the spec race. From the demoes shown so far BB10 seems to be very very fast and that's with software that is not completed yet and hardware that is not the highest spec that will be available for BB10. Once Aristo comes out I believe it will perform so good that people will simply not need higher specs.

I wouldn't say BB10 is behind but rather Blackberry London is
Next year it's gonna be all about quad cores n 1080p screens
SGS4 ,HTC M7 n Xperia Yuga are all set to launch in Q1 or Q2 next year according to rumours n all are 5inch 1080p quad core monsters
I'd say skip london n bring out Aristo
OR bring out both devices simultaneously
N m saying that they should enter the spec race so as to ATTRACT consumers
Because when you go for a premium device you obviously wanna brag about it n that's what lead to this spec race in the first placeLast edited by Pallavgarg10; 12-06-2012 at 04:18 AM.
