Do these apps always stay on so msgs get delivered. I'm having better luck getting faster replies when I send txts to family using Bbm in iphone.

BBM for iPhone can be a pain due to how iOS background running apps are coded (not really a fault of BBM). If your family member doesn't leave the app at least open in the background (double tap home button and it should be one of the apps in the task switcher), along with having the option in settings for it to run in background, it'll be delayed to iOS.

Android however has a built in setting that makes it a bit more reliable than iOS. It's built right into the BBM app and basically it's the reasoning behind the BBM icon in the notification shade in Android.
