    A friend of mine thinks this mean the contact is "online". From what I understand, BBM is always online technically, not like whatsapp. Anyone have a link to something that explains this so I can forward it on?

    I don't have any unread messages to check, but (from memory) the contact in BBM contacts list view goes to bold when there is a new and unread message.
