If you are anything like me, you use your BlackBerry phone for a thousand different things everyday. My phone has become my camera, my thermometer, my reading material, my social connection and my music player....to name a few uses. This tutorial will show you how to create playlists of music on your phone using only your BlackBerry.

To create a Playlist of music, we assume that YOU HAVE MUSIC on your phone. I simply put my music in folders by artists' name and drag and drop them on my SD card using my USB cable. You may have other ways to get your music onto your card. Once the music is there, how do I create a Playlist so I can play my "Driving Mix"? or my "Gym" mix? Or my "Mellow at my Desk" mix?

    1. Start by clicking on your Music icon on your phone.
Then you will see the following screen:

We need to start at the bottom of this screen shot. Across the bottom are various tabs: Recent, Library, Playlists, Radio and More. Notice that Playlists is depressed for me. In the boxes above are some of the Playlists I have saved on my phone. The last square says Create. That's what we are going to do now.

    2. Click Create. You see a screen next listing all your music by Songs/ Albums/Artists in alphabetical order.
A word about alphabetical order: True Alphabetical order starts with 123 (or numerical order) first and then proceeds to the As, Bs, Cs etc. Any tracks named with a number will be listed in the first group of songs you see. Music downloaded from torrents needs a lot of cleanup, if you will. The ID3 tags on them are usually very sparse and often mislabeled. I like to clean up the ID3 tags on my PC before transferring the music over to my phone. I use a freeware app. You can find an ID3 tagger by using Google. Music ripped from a self-owned cd is very often "cleaner" and more uniformly labelled and the ID3 tags are usually ok.

So we have a list of songs starting with "A". That's because I am searching by Songs. I could search by Albums. Or Artists. So let's say I want to search by a song title and I am looking for a song by Better Than Ezra. Here is what I do: Click the magnifying glass at the bottom to search. The magnifying glass says Filter Songs.

Notice that the name of the Artist appears under the song title. I have located "Crazy Lucky" by Better Than Ezra. If I want to add it to my new Playlist, I click the plus sign on the right-hand side of the screen. Immediately you will see the plus sign AND a minus sign and a 1 appear next to the song like so:

    4. Click back into the box. Follow the same steps to find songs by Artist or Album title. Let's say you have an entire album by The Black Keys (Yay! So do I!) Search by Artist and when you find their entire album it looks like this:

The tap the album name and you can choose the individual songs. Like this:

Again you will see the PLUS sign which means "Click on me to add me to your list!"

    5. Keep adding music till you are satisfied with the list you have compiled. It can be edited at any time, so it is not set in stone. Now that I have chosen several songs for my Playlist, I want to show you how to save it.

Simply click on Done. You will be returned to a screen which lists all the songs you have chosen.

    6. The text box at the top has titled your new list Playlist 1.Click in the box and rename your new Playlist to something more appropriate.

    7. Here we can see the title I have chosen for this list of songs. Once you do that, click on the check mark at the bottom to SAVE.
Notice there is a music note with a plus next to it. That means "click here to add more songs!"

    8. Also in this same screen shot you can see those stacked lines on the right hand side of each song. This should look familiar to you. Just like your HUB, you can re-arrange the order of the songs here by touching the bars next to the song and dragging it into position. Like this:

    9. Once you save your new Playlist, you are returned to the open list.

    10. Congratulations! You have created a Playlist of music on your phone!!

NOTE: There are lots of benefits to creating playlists for entire Albums of music or all songs by the same Artist. Create yourself a mix of your favorites or music to accompany your many moods. Create as many as you like and you will find how easy it is to listen to your favorite tunes!
    Have fun!
