If you want, you can take a look at a disassembled version of the relevant internal classfile here. | So basically it's possible but not yet possible. Is that what you're saying?

I'm saying there is hidden functionality in the options application protected by backdoor key sequences, specifically in 8 areas.
AutoOnOffOptionsItem, DateTimeOptionsitem, LocationServicesOptionsItem, NetworkOptionsItem, ScreenKeyboardOptionsItem, SecurityOptionsItem, SIMCardOptionsItem, and StatusOptionsItem. Those are all classnames, by the way.
The only class I've looked at in depth within the Options App code has been the SIMCardOptionsItem (MEPD/MEP#) to see how unlock codes were processed by the operating system (it's fed to the firmware via a native call unfortunately), but I recalled seeing code to control the appearance of the 2G/3G mode selection in the NetworkOptionsItem class.
While I didn't take a very good look at the code (since I was looking for something completely different), it should just be a matter of decoding the openDevelopmentBackdoor/openProductionBackdoor methods in the relevant classes to see what it enables.
That URL links to a disassembled version of the code that handles the mobile network options window within the operating system. Someone with the time to analyze it could probably figure out the activation key sequence.
I personally, don't have the time at the moment to spend on it, but I didn't want to leave you hanging with just an enigmatic "it's possible" statement.
I'll have a chance to look more closely at this in a few weeks. At which point, I'll also investigate the ~100 other classfiles that contain backdoor activation sequences in the BlackBerry operating system.

Java disassembly makes my brain hurt. The only thing I could have maybe seen is references to the current time, suggesting that it may be uptime dependent like that escreen algorithm.

Ok....sorry for not replying to this thread sooner. There is an easier way to go about changing the band your phone picks up to EDGE only. First...turn off your radio. If you open the escreen, go to "Mobile Network Engineering Screen" then to "Cell Information" you will see a "Bandmode" option. If your radio is turned off you will be able to select between the options then click the BB button and click "set bandmode". You will see your "Bands" option on that screen change to whatever band you set. In the case of wanting 2G you could set it to GSM850.
Next, re-enable your radio and you should only receive EDGE signal then. There are quite a few options in there, and if you read up on your freqs you can change them to what suits you best as well as lock into a tower near you for best signal.
Hope that helps!

Oh....also forgot to mention that you can also select "ALL" in the "Cell Information" screen for your bandmode then go back to the mobile engineering screen and then to "PLMN selection" and, again, with your radio off you can select "manual" under "selection mode" and disable the UTRAN RAT so your phone only works on GERAN(make sure this is enabled.
Again...hope this helps, but I am not here to hand hold through the process, so please no PM's on this.....I will not answer. Make sure you know what you are doing, write down the steps you take so you can back them out and I would suggest reading up on GSM, UMTS, 2G, 3G, GERAN, UTRAN, and whatever else you can find to get to know about what you are doing before you try it....makes things a lot easier if you educate yourself before you jump in with both feet.
I personally get great 3G reception and have set my bandmode to EGSM900 with GERAN disabled and on manual selection mode and always have 5 bars and rarely drop service anywhere. Love 3G here....not sure why everyone hates on it so much!

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | Yes....as long as you make sure you set it to manual mode. You will see after you set the mode to manual selection it will stay on whatever band you pick from the other screen. Again, turn off your radio and chose your band first then go to the next step and choose manual mode and turn off UTRAN.....UTRAN is the 3G network in not so many words, and GERAN is the 2G, EDGE network again in not so many words. You shouldn't pick up the 3G UTRAN network any more after this change until you reload a new OS I believe....it seems like I have had to do this each time I put a new OS on my phone. This solution has to be switched each time you reboot or battery pull your phone, the first one (changing the radio frequency to GSM850) will stick after reboot though. Both work, and you can use in combination in case you want to use multiple bands while travelling to pick up signals in different areas as 3G may have better coverage in some than 2G.
Yes, I know this is all kinda confusing, but please do read up on this stuff. If you are interested in BB escreens then you most likely have an interest in what you are doing to it I would hope. Knowledge is freedom, without knowledge how can you ever pass anything along to anyone else.....one day I may either be banned from here or die in a car wreck.....then what would you do?
As far as reading and getting this knowledge and understanding what you are doing before you do it so you know how and why it works I would suggest going to wikipedia and searching for all the terms (UMTS, 3G, EDGE, 2G, Cellular frequencies, UTRAN, GERAN, GAN, etc...) and also check out 3GPP for a ton of info.
Hope this all helps everyone a bit!

-B | Are you able to set it bAck to use 3G without reloading the OS. Also, does my phone have to be unbranded to do this?

Yes you can. No, just unlocked. You can reset it to 3G using the same steps....as I said....write down all your steps and keep it in a notebook so you can follow them in reverse the next time.

You can also go in under the escreen on the very first access page and click the "deactivate radio" option.
Not sure if this is OS specific or not, but I have been doing it since .237 or something like that I think. Possibly the build before that but not positive. May only be able to turn it off on certain builds. I am on OS 5 right now and it also has that option.
Once you change it in the drop down menu are you clicking the BB button and clicking "set bandmode"? I would also recommend changing the GERAN/UTRAN setting to solely GERAN and see if that does it for you.

Same here, "Bad user data. Please verify and try again."
On .247, might actually be OS specific. I'll downgrade to .237 later and see what happens... Changed to "Manual Mode" and "UTRAN enabled", still can't change bandmode...
Don't know if being unbranded actually disables that option either...
