Default Can't get apps to use WiFi?

Hi guys,

I received my new mobile phone yesterday, a Blackberry Bold on T-Mobile - I am in Scotland.

I've been using an N95 for three years now, had two classics then an 8GB - I got a Blackberry Curve 8900 and sent it back as it didn't have 3G ... they told me it did.

Basically I use my phone in two main locations, in my home (Which I have very poor/intermittent network signal but have full WiFi) and in my work (Which has full mobile network signal, but no WiFi).

My N95 was able to connect to either the 3G or the WiFi and download new mail messages, updates to facebook. I went for the Blackberry Bold as it has 3G, WiFi, Etc.

So, I installed Google Mail, Google Maps, Facebook onto my Blackberry once I got it set up and have ran into a problem ... when I enable the WiFi and try using these App's it tries to use the 3G and not the Wifi ... but the browser uses the Wifi - any way around it? Tried a quick google but no luck.

Any help appreciated.

That is werid as they should be running over WIFI when WIFI i enabled, unless.......... read below.

Is the WIFI symbol Greyed Out or is it White, you will not miss it being white as it is a pretty white color..

If greyed out, then nothing will use WIFI.

Just to note ... google maps requires GPS (means needs a mobile connection established) to locate you precisely (means within 3 meters) , but does not need GPS to find you within in say 100 meters.

The WIFI logo at the top right hand side is grey - but the Browser works perfectly fine? It shows connected next to the network on the main page (IE - 'T-Mobile - Home') so I would guess it was connected OK?

If it is Grey then WIFI is not connected fully and the browser will work somewhat, but its using your 2g/3g connection part.

Yes it has been rumored, but i never could confirm it that when the wifi logo is grey the browser worked. I shut off my 2g/3g connection and left WIFI greyed out and NOPE not work.

Ok either way you must have WIFI logo WHITE to have WIFI function properly.

Even though it states connected in the manage connections, the wifi service is not picking up an IP address or subnet mask and that is why it is Greyed Out.

Try deleting your wifi profile for your house on the phone and reset it up again.

Now remember these WORDS>>>>>>>>>> BOLDS>>>>> HATE >>>>> ANYTHING >>>>> BUT >>>>>> WPA >>> OR >>>> WPA-PSK >>> ENCRYPTION.

so make sure your running such encryption and not the older type as the bold is a secure phone and wants a secure connection for best results, otherwise your WIFI logo will grey out.

Cool, thanks.

I now have the white WIFI logo and the problem with getting Facebook, WLM, Etc remains? It just keeps trying to use the data connection - I disabled the 'Mobile Network' and it just says it fails to connect.

Certain apps do require a Data Connection to work = a data account like 500mb is what i have on my plan.

These mobile apps require this in order for them to work over your phone network (not your wifi network) thats how they work to try and ensure the safest secure communication possible between you and say facebook and so forth.

The long and short of it is that not all BlackBerry applications are Wifi enabled.

Pardon me, I may be misunderstanding you here, but even though the logo is greyed-out, your browser (assuming you've set the default to 'hotspot' and not 'media net') should work perfectly. When wifi is set, it's not using your 2g/3g, but your wifi because you are obviously connected to wifi. I can vouch for this because I do not have a data plan, and I utilize my home connection as a means of connecting my bold to the internet. A white symbol indicates that your bold is connected to the wonderful world of blackberry servers.

Like somebody has already pointed out: some blackberry apps work on wifi while others do not.
