Question Barcode on a movie poster???

I was leaving the movies yesterday and I saw a poster withe a huge Blackberry bar code on it. I stopped in my tracks out of curiosity and immediately pulled out my bold with bbm 5 and tried to scan it. But instead of adding it to my bbm, it took me to a website for the movie '9' with a message saying "Congrats! You found an exclusive video from '9' from producer Tim Burton. (Some cartoon movie) Besides the fact that i was cool that it took me to a website... I couldn't help but wonder why it was even there, seeing as how bbm 5.0 isn't officially out yet . Does anybody know whats the deal??? Question? Comments?

I believe everything you need to know about why it was there is answered in your first post.

It was there for people like you to find. You are a coveted demographic. You are coming out of a movie theatre and you own a blackberry (i.e. rich and well-off enough to still watch movies in a recession. Sounds stupid but it's true). They knew you would see it and go "WTF" and so you would scan it.

It would then take you to their site in which you view their upcoming movie. It is great from a marketing perspective because people ARE curious.

Not to mention, they are also gauging just how tech savvy most people are. I wouldn't be surprised if this kind of marketing doesn't get picked up more.

They basically get to see how many people are not only watching movies, but how many own blackberrys, how many are savvy enough to see it is a scan-able barcode, and how many are curious enough to try and scan it. They get great marketing data and also word of mouth and free promotion because you saw their trailer and now you posted it here. Most of us who have BBM 5 are now curious and will try to do the same thing etc...

These are QR Codes. not BBM codes.
Allot of smartphones can scan this code including BlackBerries now.

Try scanning this one:

I have a Curve 8330m v4.5.0.131 (platform 3.4.0.2.5) from Sprint. Is my phone capable of reading these?

Sorry, I'm new to all this and still trying to figure it out

you have to have blackberry messenger (bbm) 5.0...which, unless you actually upgraded that yourself, you won't have. so the short answer is no, most likely you don't have that option.

I thought there was a QR Code reader app for blackberry besides BBM 5, like QR Code or BeeTagg

there are some, but since the op was about the bmm 5.0 feature, i figured that's what he was asking. i used to have one, but never used it so i got rid of it.

now that it's mentioned, this may be a barcode for any scanner to read, not just bbm readers?? meaning windows mobile, symbian or whatever else has a barcode reader app...

Companies have been using this technology for a while now in Asia...these barcodes can be read by many mobile devices...just new to BB...they link to products web sites and etc.

Ummmmm... Yea these codes are used all over the world... Such as in japan where my friend who owns an anime shop all his shipments from japan have these codes on every product. This is not new. LoL. Been around for a while now. The US just doesn't use it on our products since we have UPC barcodes.

we actually do use it in addition to a barcode on some products (wife's face wash bottle has both hahaha). you're right though, these have been around for awhile, but i think the US is just now starting to use them for things besides product tracking, such as entertainment and personal communication.
