Default BES Server

I have had a BES since May of last year at my office. I have 6 Sprint and 12 Nextel Blackberry users on this. Last Thursday A.M. I went to reply to an email and a red X appeared almost instantly in the sent message. I then tried to send another email directly and got the same red X. I asked another user to try his and he got the same thing. I then emailed other users and every one of them had the same thing. I called our network people and they checked our BES and could find nothing out of the ordinary going on so I got on the phone with Nextel and they sent me to their blackberry support who had me try all kinds of different things to no avail. I then contacted our network people again to check and they could still find nothing wrong. I contacted Nextel again and after being disconnected a few times (lovely customer support) I again was sent to blackberry support (I think Sprint this time) and he looked up my phone plan and said I did not have the BES support plan on my phone and that I needed this for the BES to work. I had him check another phone number in my company and he said that this phone did not have it either.
I asked him how I could still receive emails just fine and how it is that this has been working just fine for almost a year. He could give me no answer and just said that I needed the BES upgrade for an additional $20.00.
I called my account Rep who said that they thought that this was only applicable to the Sprint side of the house and then got me another Nextel Rep who said "no, you have to have it for Nextel also"
Can any one shed some light on any of this and does it make any sense at all?

If you are in a Microsoft Exchange environment, could it possibly be the below issue? All sites are about the same issue, just different explanations.

BlackBerry - Send As Issue - FAQ

Atot.net - Red X when sending e-mail via blackberry

KB04707 - Unable to send email messages because Send As permission has been revoked - Port3101.org : Your BES Connection

Not sure if I'm fully getting the jist of the story here.

But you DO need BES plan on all phones in order to get access BES servers. Doesn't matter if its SPRINT or NEXTEL.
