Normally, instant messages use the data plan.

Here is the deal. The IM apps that come loaded on a T-Mo blackberry will use text messages. I know stupid! If you delete those apps and go directly to RIM's mobile download site and download gtalk or any other IM app those apps do not use text messages only data.

My 8310 is work issued with SMS disabled (citing "productivity" concerns). I do use Yahoo IM and Blackberry Messenger all the time so they must use data, obviously.

The IM services that come pre-installed on my T-Mobile BlackBerry 8320 required a date plan to use (AIM, BB Messenger, ICQ, etc). There isn't a way to configure it to use SMS instead, only data.

If you have Beejive ($20-$30) and the Curve 8320 (T-Mobile's Curve), you can use a WiFi connection to have unlimited IM through almost any IM service because it allows use of data from WiFi. Works for me

IM's are counted as text messages. You need the BB data to make it function but they are charged as SMS.

The above is true unless you delete the pre-loaded IM clients and download them from RIM directly. Then they use data only not SMS.

This is simple peeps...IM's count as text messages. Send 1 IM, it's charged as 1 text...send 10 IM's in one conversation and it counts as 10 text messages. Also when you receive the IM reply it counts as a text.

The Blackberry data plans only cover internet & email.

Text messaging plans cover SMS, MMS & IM.
