| | AT&T to require smartphone data plans starting September 6th Quote:
AT&T subscribers, we have good news and bad news. The bad news is that as of September 6th, AT&T will begin requiring that all smartphones sign up for a smartphone data plan. The good news is that customers with smartphones purchased prior to September 6th with non-smartphone data plans will be grandfathered in and will not have to upgrade their current plans. Note that if you currently use a feature phone with a data plan and you upgrade to a smartphone on or after September 6th, you will not be able to keep your current MediaNet plan.
We’ve been hearing rumblings to this effect for a few weeks now but as of this morning it’s 100% confirmed thanks to an internal email from one of our ninjas. AT&T’s claimed reasoning behind the move: to ensure customers receive a predictable bill each month. Mmm hmm. Note that this only applies to smartphones purchased from AT&T or a dealer of course, so those of you who opt for unlocked handsets should be unaffected. Hit the jump for the internal email circulated today at AT&T.

That's crap. Plain and simple. They can't just force their customers to obtain data plans (okay yes they can, but the principle is), what if they're older or simply have no requirement for internet? Bad customer service tactic, it's going to tank. I guess my other thread is kind of useless now, I'll have to have data after all haha...

It only applies to new contracts. As long as you don't make any changes or get a new phone, it will remain as it was.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | I see, well hopefully they dont decide to change it again and decide that everyone has to have a data plan.

I have a question about this. I've read it a few time, but I couldn't find an answer. Since att is requiring a data plan for smart phones, is there a length on how long I have to have the data plan? I know for the iphone, the data plan is required for however long I have it, will this also be applied?

The phrase here seems to imply that you will be charged. Quote: |
Data Plans: An eligible data plan is required for certain devices including iPhone and other designated Smartphones and PDA's. Eligible data plans cover data usage in the U.S. and do not cover international data usage and charges. If it is determined that you are using iPhone or other designated Smartphone or PDA without an eligible data plan, AT&T reserves the right to add an eligible data plan to your account and bill you the appropriate monthly fee.

You all can still buy a phone on here/ craigslist/ ebay, and you won't be required to have a data plan. Just swap the good old sim card.

Not trying to be a smart a** but a blackberry is just a regular phone without data, why not just upgrade to a regular phone?

They have to go down this road really; they can't impose such a radical change without having you belly up to the counter to sign some documents acknowledging it when you get your new phone.
