Question Pre-paid BB/Data plans?

Hi all,

I will be traveling to the USA a few times in the next few months. I have unlocked my Rogers Curve 8310 and would like to swap in a AT&T (or T-mo, whatever) SIM with a pre-paid plan to stay connected while I'm away without Rogers breaking the bank with roaming fees.

Does anyone know what my options are in this regard? I fumbled around the various carrier sites but couldn't really find what I am looking for.

Would like to be able to send/receive emails and use various apps. Voice not a must but would be nice of course.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

You can not get a BB data plan with AT&T's prepaid service at all. However, T-Mobile has a prepaid "Flexpay" service that does offer BB data plans. FlexPay(SM) Rate Plan FAQs

You can get a prepaid data plan through AT&T. Its called Pick your Plan. You use a credit card to pay for this service but you have to log back into your account to cancel. Otherwise, it will charge you once a month. The data plan will work on the BB but some of the functions/features will not work properly. i.e. push, messenger

Thanks for your responses.

So, my understanding then is that I could use this flex-pay system to roam with my phone and use data at a reasonable rate in the USA, but my emails would have to be checked on the web? I use Gmail, so their App should probably work.

But I wouldn't be able to use PIN messages or BBIM?

What about other applications that use data? Such as Google Maps (we're going on a road trip so they would be most useful).

Is there any way to temporarily re-assign my BIS account to the US carrier?

Thanks in advance.

As long as there is tmobile coverage you can have data and ise it whtever u like as for temporarily assigning I guess u wud have to call tmobile bb support and have ur PIN released after u quit flexpay

Not right now it can't.

Given the fact that Verizon have announced a pre-paid BlackBerry plan.

T-Mobile have FlexPay (even though you have to buy a BlackBery to get it).

Boost Mobile also do a pre-paid service for BlackBerrys but again you have to buy an 8330 for $260 (I think it was $260) to make it work.

I feel that AT&T will soon announce a comparable product. AT&T have a better charging structure for Pre-paid than most of the other carriers and it would be very easy for them to offer a month by month feature package on Go Phone (like Orange do in the UK and elsewhere).

Will they do this. I dunno but pre-paid BlackBerry plans that are cancellable on a monthly basis do seem to be on the rise.

The big advantage for carriers here is that they do not need to worry about selling a phone. They just sell megabytes and minutes, paid in advance.
