Seems there's still confusion among alot of people about how to properly convert video for viewing on their Storm. If
Codecs and
Framerates are Greek to you, give Slysoft's
CloveDVD Mobile a try. There are several other programs out there that will deliver as well, but I've found from reading responses to them that they're overly complicated for some. This program is about as simple as you can get while still getting great quality results.
A few things before you start: *CloneDVD Mobile does not remove encryption from store-bought commercial DVDs on its own. If you need help with backing up encrypted DVDs that you own, I'd recommend using another Slysoft product -
AnyDVD.
*CloneDVD Mobile and
AnyDVD are not free programs. However, Slysoft does offer an unlimited 21 day trial of all its products. No watermarks, no partial movie clips. I found their programs pretty affordable and they are offering a 20% discount now through the end of the year. You can find out more and download from here:
Slysoft.com *I do all my conversions on a 5 year old Dell Inspiron Laptop. It's not the fastest thing out there, but it frees me up to still work on my desktop at the same time. I can't attest to how fast this program is on a newer multi-core system, but it does take quite some time to finish a movie on my laptop. If that's a concern for you, you may want to perform your conversions when you won't need to use your computer for a while.
EDIT- I originally set this up as a tutorial for
MP4's at a good resolution for the Storm. I've since found that there is also a
3GP setting that also works well on the Storm and the files typically take up less room on your media card. 3GP, for those that don't know is a more generic format that works on most cel phones capable of playing video. If you'd prefer 3GP over MP4, you only need to make 2 changes to the listed instructions:
1) On the first screen, choose: >Other Devices > Ketai Softbank (3gp)
2) Then on the Options / Output Method screen, use the drop down menu for resolution and pick 320x240
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) CloneDVD Mobile does offer Blackberry support, but hasn't yet been updated to include the Storm. So instead I've been using the setting for Apple's iPod Touch with good results. Just highlight the iPod Touch pre-set and click next.
2) Assuming you've already inserted the DVD, select the proper drive, which should be showing "Video_TS"
3) Once you select your dvd drive, the screen will populate with the information from your movie, including video format, audio channels, subtitles, chapters, etc. Fortunately, the program automatically handles most of this for you. The only thing you need to select here are the chapters you want included in the conversion. The program should select the main movie for you automatically, and will leave out the extra's (like menus and previews). As you can see in the screenshot, it selected chapters 1-32 for me and left the other content unselected. Once you verify your movie is selected, click next.
4) Unless you will be changing the language for the movie's audio and subtitles, you can click next and skip the next screen.
5) If you can handle the next screen, you've conquered the hardest part of this program! Here you'll find a few simple adjustment for fine-tuning your conversion.
On the left you'll see:
*
DVD Configuration - just a recap of the movie file you selected earlier
*
Screen Shot preview and Zoom settings - allows you to partially crop the output so your movie will fill more of the Storm's screen. Particularly helpful with Widescreen format movies.
On the right you'll see:
*
Resolution - preset for the iPod Touch, doesn't have any other options with this setting (may change based on zoom settings)
*
Video Quality - Slider bar to adjust your output quality. Try different settings to see what suits you. Just a word of advice - keep in mind the small screen size of the Storm. You won't need the highest quality possible to get a good picture. I personally set it for the lowest quality setting and still end up with a great picture and it keeps my file sizes to a minimum so I can store more videos on my memory card

*
Deinterlace Video Material - I'm no expert on this, but my understanding is checking this makes the video more compatible with more devices. Since I convert for my than just my Storm, I've always left this checked with no problems.
*
1/2/3 pass - The higher the number of passes, the better quality of your output file. Each additional pass gives the program more time to analyze the video, which ultimately allows it to render a better conversion.
Keep in mind- Additional passes will
greatly increase your conversion time!! If you're already working with an older system that's on the slow side, you may want to start this up and walk away for a long while!
*
Enter Filename - The program automatically remembers the last movie you worked with. Click the button on the right to re-name to your current movie. Choose where you want the file saved to.
*
Produce Separate Chapter Files - I'd recommend never using this unless you want to end up with 30-some odd different files. This makes each chapter of the movie is own individual file

*
Label - Should automatically populate with the movie title
6) Once you choose your settings, click "
GO"
7) Walk away and let it work. When it's done converting you'll have an mp4 file suitable for loading onto your Storm!
Take note - On this screen there is an option to shut down the computer when the conversion is complete!! So
if converting your movies takes too much time for you; consider starting this program before you leave for work or go to bed. Once it's done, it will save your file and automatically shut down your PC!!
Good luck and enjoy!
