Default 8320 Wifi / Modem

I've been using my phone as a tethered (spelling) modem for a while and it has worked ok (although I'm still convinced my 8700g was faster).

Anyway, does it work the same way (open DM and connect using the setup modem) when you are on a UMA/Wifi network or is it different?

Also, today I seem to be having a problem using it as a modem (even on EDGE), when I hit dial it gives me an error ' ERROR 734: the PPP link control protocol was terminated' while verifying the username and password. I haven't done anything to change anything so I 'm not really sure why this is happening.

Any thoughts?

Have you updated your OS since the tethering last worked? If not, then there could have been a change from your carrier. You could be missing a data plan code in the billing system or a setting in whatever software T-Mobile uses on the back-end for data access control.

Check with T-Mobile to have them check your account. They problem have teams that work on system errors and they could have made a small change, though that possibility is slim.

If you have a Wifi connection, it would be much simpler to use that for your laptop.

Using your device as a modem makes sense when you are out of Wifi range.

Thanks Montezuma.. that's exactly what must have happened. I went back through the process of setting it up again and I noticed that line where I put wap.voicestream.com was blanked out. I tried it again and it works now.

I presume you still have to follow the exact same steps when using Wifi.. is wifi faster?

Much faster. EDGE provides connections speeds similar to a good dial up modem. Wifi is network fast, 48Mbps is typical.
