Is 160 characters the max for SMS?

I know that I may not be the only person who gets long-winded when typing an SMS text, and have to go beyond the 160 characters. I really find it to be a pain to send a message, then compose a completely new message to continue my message. Is there a way to supercede the 160 character limit and continue typing withing one message....please help!

Nope at least not with verizon. its all u can do on any verizon phone. I believe it just has to do with the limit of data verizon wants on their network through text messages. thats why they charge more for picture messages. Welcome to Querizon

WOW!! Well, the good thing about it is that I have unlimited messaging, SMS and MMS so I really dont have to worry about it. The main concern was/is convenince... Thanks armyjoe

Yea dream i feel your pain, i text ALOT, like upwards to 5000 a month on some months lol. But 160 characters is the most you can do and you cant change it. Even though i wish it could be beefed up to like 200 its restricted for a reason. Hopefully eventually providers will increase the character amount in SMS.

yup is soo freakin annoying having to type a message...save draft...make another just to finish what you want to say then save that then go back and send the first one...then the last part... if i had a buck for every time ive had to do that I could quit my job. Its def time they change it

OR just get everyone u know to get a BB then just us BBM all day...the world would be a better place

if you want to do a long text just type in a MMS because u can have up to 1000 characters as opposed to 160 for an SMS

doesnt that depend on the phone you are sending it to? i thought most of the non smart phones didnt support mms?

I believe that if your sending your SMS message to another verizon customer then you can go past the 160 character limit....at least I could on my old ENV2, havent tried yet on my 8330

a lot of phones in general support mms depending on what they entail, if its just characters or letters im sure theyll get it, try it out and see with someone u know that doesnt have a smartphone

mms is media text. just like sending a picture without the picture so you can have 1000 characters.. any phone that can get a picture message can get a mms

SMS = Short Message Service, SHORT being the
operative word. You need more than the character limit consider
sending an email or just calling the person. There must be 1000
threads on this issue.

The 160 character limit for SMS is not a carrier restriction. The length of SMS messges are limited in order to not tie up bandwidth. They are limited to 256 bytes

Actually it is:

Data Coding - determines the maximum number of characters that a single
text message can have. 7 bit = 160 characters, 8 bit = 140

Well, ok you got me there. My point was, you can't have text messages longer than 160 characters due to the 256 byte limit.

What is it with people not knowing is depends on your carrier?
Sprint has a 160 char limit.
AT&T / verizon does not.
