Also this is the reference point for the wariness I have about getting the N900.
-5800 releases (first s60v5 device)
-A lot of stability/speed issues
-Complete lack of kinetic scrolling
-useless today screen
Then Nokia releases N97, useful today screen (widgets) that actually does something, kinetic scrolling, but generally worse performance than 5800 due to less optimized firmware and no increase in memory.
Then Nokia releases the 5530, a cheaper 5800 with improved hardware but no 3g. But this phone has a useful today screen AND kinetic scrolling...
Question is what will the N97 mini have that the N97 doesn't... Early Nokia adopters get screwed.
The 5800 still has a useless today screen and no kinetic now that we are up to v30 firmware and it's a more expensive device than the 5530.

As this is a new OS, I think a lot of your observarions wont come into this as this OS has been developed with the aid of the maemo community. Theres a lot of question marks and hopefully when I get a unit I will be in a position to answer them.

The OS is an irrelevant factor as far as Nokia's support is concerned. And yes, this is a new OS and the first Nokia phone to carry it, which makes you an early adopter (also considered a beta tester in Nokia's view).
i.e., expect something like the N930 or N900 mini to release shortly after with stuff/fixes you would have wanted in the N900

I just read on Phonedog that the N900 does have a resistive touch screen which is a major draw back for me, but the demo video it's looks very responsive, I'm hoping with the N900 Nokia finally got the touch screen right, That It will be nice to try Maemo OS (anything is better than S60)

The N97 was almost a breakthrough for Nokia in terms of actually creating a smartphone that will have sufficient capabilites for almost everything. I've been with the Series60 OS since the Nokia 3650 and Siemens SX1, so I think I do have enough information to make those rebuttals.
But, as usual, for the first 5 to 6 months the platform is almost unusable - too many errors, restarts and other faults. IT gets better every year, though.Hopefully the N97 mini will be a better device. Unfortunately, the size of the regular one is very "tiny"

The screen in 5800 and N97 differs a lot, and while the 5800 was a media phone the N97 set out as a smart one.IMO, the 5800 was somewhat a test platform for N97 pre-production field test.It turned out surprisingly well though. In Europe at least 10 different models of the phones that are functionally like 5800 on sale, and that's for a long period of time. The whole Idea is not so new. I was used to carrying HTC Advantage with me for mobile productivity.Hopefully, I switched to N97 and am pairing it with an Acer netbook for extreme needs. Otherwise, N97 is all i really use full-time.
But still, I'm already happy for my future Bold(Next week It'll be coming to me)

The specs on this seem really impressive. Reminds me of HTC spec sheets. Nokia always makes good devices, just like HTC, but they are crazy expensive and sometimes don't perform as advertised. I would have to have this in my hands before I can truly judge. But the specs look impressive.

not set in stone. But if i had to bet on it? Then YES. This is prolly the best phone i'd ever seen. Also, Meh to the droid!

I like the N900 but I'm really turned off by the plastice resistive touch screen.
If I bought it I would stock up on screen protectors.

I never buy the massively overpriced name brand protectors anymore, but I always make sure to get the hard material screen protectors because the soft ones are gummy, a little sticky and not as clear...
