| | Apple Slams the iTunes Door on Palm Pre
Recently Palm released the Pre smartphone phone that looked and acted very similar to another smartphone, namely the iPhone. It even did something no other smartphone has been allowed or able to do and that was (past tense) connect to iTunes. Well as you can imagine that went over like a fart in church with Apple and they immediately implemented an “upgrade” to block the Pre’s access.
In response, Palm threaten to change the USB vendor code so that, when connected, the Pre looked like an iPhone to iTunes and could still sync. And that brings us to where we are today.
There is an industry standards group called USB Implementers Forum and they ruled today that this move by Palm violates the group’s rules.
Now the ball is back in Palm’s court and we will have to wait and how they respond.
Palm spokesman Derick Mains said the company contacted the USB group because it believes consumers should be able to decide how they use media they own that is not subject to copy-protection restrictions. He said Palm is reviewing the letter and will respond if it thinks it is appropriate.
Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr said the company had no comment. (imagine that)
This is just another blow in the continuing battle between Apple and Palm. This rivalry stems from the fact that Palm’s chairman and CEO is Jon Rubinstein who once was an executive at Apple and oversaw the iPod development.

thanks for the read, and this would be something apple would do, it realizes that the palm pre could be a great phone and will shut anything down that it feels will threaten the iphone

Wow....so Apple kills off people's ability to access music they've purchased and keeps consumers from having another avenue to possibly buy their music from Apple. You'd think they'd welcome the possibility of an enhanced revenue stream.

Ok don't get me wrong, I only dislike the iPhone because it's the rival phone, but honestly I do LOVE my Macbook Pro.
That having been said, I'm very saddened by the recent direction that Apple seems to be headed in. It's ironic that they are starting to get the same attention that Microsoft once got.
I wonder how long it will be before they start feeling the wrath of the 13 year old virus makers?

Yeah but its always so trendy to have an iPhone, or other Apple product. Eventually it will become trendy to go after those same devices with viruses and such. Honestly Apple talks about their security like it is impenetrable, we all know the reason very few viruses attack them is like you said there are a ton more pcs in the marketplace and its easier to cause havoc. I see it happening in the near future though with all that Apple keeps doing.

Smart move on apple. They are keeping all of their products exclusive, making people go to them. And people do go to them. Its a little messed up, but that is business, and that has always been their strategy. I can't imagine them changing their ways. Palm pre should have a built in frostwire app to combat itunes. Hahahaha

I own an 80GB iPod Classic and that will be the last piece of Apple anything I buy. Apple purposefully fixed the database so only iTunes could populate the hard drive. Every time I went to put music on my iPod in my OS of choice, Linux, the thing would blow up. It works better now than iTunes ever could manage. No more Apple for me. That Palm Pre looks nice, and I almost bought one but opted for the Tour.

Slacker's gonna be even more popular if they provide caching to the Pre like they do for the BlackBerry. MP3s provide music when there's no data connection but streaming and caching can take over for that.

Why doesn't Palm just use/create some sort of media syncing software like the BB has? Wouldn't that be much easier, especially in the long run?
Even the leaked/beta DM for Macs can sync your iTunes with your BB.

iTunes is more than syncing software.

And, depsite the fact that I hate the new iTunes store, I love that iTunes organizes and plays all my music, movies, tv shows, etc. What I'm asking is this: since BB and iTunes can play nice, why can't Palm do the same thing? Wouldn't that make more sense than "hacking" the USB code?

Oh I misunderstood. I thought you were suggesting that Palm create its own brand of iTunes.

Then apple found out and immediatly blocked them. Then palm was threatening to hack the usb's to be the same. I don't think they have anymore chances to play nice anymore.
