Talking Pressure-sensitive capacitive screen?

All right I'll admit I'm a fan of the SurePress screen and although I understand why RIM is phasing it out I am sorry to see it go. I can however propose an alternative: stick with using a capacitive screen but under each corner of the screen have a pressure sensor a la Nintendo's Wii Fit. This means that it can sense how hard the user is pressing the screen and trigger haptics to create the illusion of pushing a button. And the sensitivity can be adjusted or even turned off according to user preference. Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure RIM said SurePress is here to stay... Why do you think its getting phased out?

Mainly because the beta hardware that one of the other websites got (don't remember which one) was noted for not clicking.
And this would be also a good idea because:
A. The screen doesn't move and has no place for dirt o get inside.
B. No moving parts, which adds to the durability of the device.
C. Sensitivity can be adjusted or even switched off for the click-haters
D. Because it has sensors at each corner it can approximate where your finger is and ignore accidental brushes of your left thumb while typing with your right.
E. Also because of the sensors it will, with enough code, detect when you're pressing down the shift or alt key while typing and act even more like a regular BlackBerry keyboard.
F. And because it can tell exactly how hard you're pressing, programmers can take advantage of that in their games or applications (eg: in a painting app soft pressing create thin lines, hard pressing create thicker lines).

We definitely don't know what the deal is with the new storm as far as the screen is concerned. Who knows what RIM has up they're sleeve, i'm hoping it rocks. And personally, i like the SurePress screen myself. I think it can be improved, and maybe that's the idea this time.

Surepress remains on the Storm 2, though it's been greatly improved.

One other thing: When I said I thought that the Storm 2 was not supposed to be click I was recalling the article where a site (forget which one) got their hands on one and noted that it didn't click yet they were unable to get past the EULA-could it have been that the button was stuck on that prototype?

That's what was rumored, but RIM's CEO has said "SurePress is here to stay."
I guess we'll have to either wait a little more until closer to release or when it's actually released to know for sure.

Futurdreamz, I believe that article was from Engadget. I remembering reading that same thing...but then RIM's CEO stepped up saying SurePress was here to stay....so I guess we just have to wait and see what they come out with!!

From this post on engadget it looks like rim axed the surepress screen

BlackBerry Storm 2 dropping SurePress screen?

Quote:
When we brought you those exclusive Storm 2 pics and details just a short while ago, we touched upon the "new approach to text entry," but unfortunately didn't have any details. However, lightning has struck again, and our source has gotten back to let us know that the Storm 2 does indeed have a stationary screen "just like the iPhone's," which lines up with what Boy Genius Report is hearing. That's right, it looks like RIM is axing its SurePress technology in favor of a more conventional touchscreen, though our tipster says the model he has may allow for some type of haptic feedback to be enabled. This should be great news for all you folks having dust-under-screen issues on your first-gen Storms, but obviously, we'll have to wait and see until this thing gets, you know, legit.

Don't believe it. Since when does Engadget have more knowledge than the CEO of RIM. Besides RIM has a great deal of its reputation riding on Surepress and it is not inherently faulty. Yes there were problems with the first generation but none of the issues require abandoning the concept of Surepress. A better seal around the glass edges solves the dust problem. Redesign of the single button to more than one button with less travel distance to make contact and you can reduce the screen movement and gap to acceptable levels.

Surepress is here to stay no matter what BG or Engadget have to say about it.
