the barcode is used if you are with the person or in an email and you just have to scan the image and it will add it to your bbm list. So if you go into the BBM 5.0 and click add contact then it gives you the option to type pin or email, or scan bar code. Click the scan bar code option and hold your phone in front of the picture. Heres mine to try out.

Well I don't have a computer to use and I got bbm 5.0 ota so I can't do anything With barcodes so here is my pin 305F837D. Someone add me so I can try out this bbm.

if you go on your bbm click on add contacts another screen will appear and ask you the method you want to use.. if you look at all the way of bottom theres a option called "Save your invitation barcode image".
