Wireless Network Coverage
You must be connected to the Nextel National Network to begin using many of the features of your BlackBerry device. To connect to or disconnect from the network, click Manage Connections ( ). Indicators on the Home screen show the wireless coverage level for the area in which you are using your BlackBerry device.

So, in short, each letter tells you whether one "channel" of the phone is active and locked up to the network:

N: Phone, SMS
X: Direct Connect
T: MMS
L: Data: Email, PIN, Web, Apps

Though in practice, I think if you don't have an N, nothing else works anyway.

Althought the 8350i is not capable of sending SMS messages it still uses SMS for receiving SMS messages and other functions. (voicemail I believe is one of them)

VM notifications go by SMS, as do Amber Alert messages.

It is actually possible to get an SMS to a Nextel phone yourself as well, or it used to be, by emailing it to NPANXXXXXX[at]page.nextel.com (as opposed to messaging.nextel.com, which sent it as MMS); I haven't tested this in a couple years.

Here, let me check:

Yes, that's correct. Emails to @messaging deliver as an MMS, however long it needs to be.

Emails to @page deliver as SMS, with the different alert tone, broken up into 140 character blocks, as many as necessary; the subject line is added as a first line, with a trailing CRLF.

It's probably worthy of note that I saw no appreciable delivery delay with either: under 30 seconds.

service books my friend, service books..... you need them. i dont know if they offer the 8350i where you are. but that is what you need. you may want to look at the sticky up top.... about the boost deal. that maybe the only way to go.
