Default New User Questions

Hello All,

I just recently purchased a 8350i and had a few questions.

1) I have a data plan on my current plan but do not have the BIS service but I wanted to be able to use my data plan to be able to browse the internet how would I go about this?

2) Im still kinda confused about installing apps do I just put the app files or the .jad files on the microSD card and then somehow install them on the phone or do I have to use OTA?

3) Is there a way to update your profile for your data connection I read on that I go to Options -> Mobile Network -> Menu Button -> Start Provisioning I dont have the phone on me atm to test is this correct?

If you have a place where I can read up on the basic I would appreciate your direction coming from a Nextel flip phone to this.

- 8350i on Nextel -

Thanks in Advance

This is the best place to start. Please read the lecture series, it will explain the basics. You do need to change your data plan to BIS. Blackberry internet service plan. You can not install them from your micro sd card.

Follow the first sticky at top of forum "how to" from Amy. It will give you all the info you need. Go step-by-step.
OTA is the best for apps, but if you use DM, it will pick up the correct file off your pc for the phone.

if you are using nextel dont read the sticky. that sticky is for boost.

to install the JAD files, best is OTA, but if you have them on your card put both the JAD and JAR files in the same location the....

menu
media
menu
explore.... goto the location where the files are and click on it. it will install the files.

call nextel and have them add the BIS to your account. it should be free.

See this is where I get confused some say I need the BIS to browse the internet some say I don't. My plan is a old grandfathered plan that included unlimited data. I really dont need the Push Email services or anything like that just the ability to browse the internet occassionally and maybe use programs like Googlemaps etc.

I just got the phone last night and when I attempted to use the browser it was saying I didnt have a Wifi connection so I turned wifi off and tried again but it still didnt work so is it possible for me to use my existing data connection for the default browser or do I need to install Opera or Bolt to get the existing data connection to work?

if you have the unlimited plan, nextel probably made a mistake and did not add the provisioning. they did with mine. it was a simple phone call and a battery pull.

Maybe thats the problem with the data connection then I dont have one of those new unlimited data plans but my plan does have unlimited data. All I did when I got this one in the mail was swtich the sim cards out of my old flip phone to this one so maybe I need to get them to provision it then. Thanks

Nextel has to specify your data plan as a Blackberry plan to enable BIS...I WAS TOLD (if I'm incorrect, then Sprint gave me bad info) that the BB will work fine if you don't call them, IE phone, DC, and simple internet functions, but if you don't change your plan to a designated BB plan to include BIS the phone will spontaneously stop working when the error is found

What does the top right corner say? NXTL all caps?

If so, just install the boostberry service books, and internet/messaging/data will all work.

I have a basic nextel messaging package, with the +$5 data plan. Everything works without BIS, except native push email, and BBM. Same as the boostberry users..

Fiftys is correct, as long as NXTL is in upper right corner and you just want to occasionally surf the web and use google maps, gmail, ect. then you do not need BIS added. It is just an extra charge. Nextel says you need the BIS for the BB so they can get their money back on subsidizing the cost of the 8350. This goes for Nextel or Boost...just install the SB from Amy's "how to" sticky and you will be off to the races on the world wide web.

Not at all true. On MOST old plans that's not the case. The only time it really is the case is on the new "Everything" plans.

For instance, the old SERO plans include unlimited data, but do not include BIS.

To do the limited things such as these and avoid the hassle of dealing with Nextel CS......Load the SB from Amy's How-To... It works without a data plan too!!!!!

This sounds interesting.

For some reason I don't see how its possible with my plan though maybe im wrong?

I'm on the 450 minute with unlimited text/direct connect for $50 and then I added the data plan for $5 on the sprint site. They 'think' im using an i335 still.

This sounds nice, but I don't think they would add bis?

if you put your 335 sim in an 8350, they know. i was swapping back and forth with an 870 and 880. both were under my "protection" plan. every time i switched, if i called nextel for any reason (i was having battery issues with the 880) they knew what phone i was using. so if your sim is in a 8350 they know. that might be why you dont have all of your provisioning. just because you have the sim in it, does not mean that automatically add it to your account.
