Default PDAnet vs. Tetherberry vs. mobishark

I used the beta for Tetherberry, but don't have it now so i can't compare it with PDAnet. I have not tried mobishark.

It seems to me that Tetherberry and PDAnet are very close same speed both easy to use. So i'm leaning towards PDAnet because of the cost difference.

PDAnet $30
Tetherberry $40

Post your opinions please.

I just posted my comparison in the TetherBarry thread, on my Storm phone PdaNet is a lot better.

I have tried both software and here are the result I am getting:
1. Speed is about the same on both software. Both support full Internet connection and do not use Proxy. I guess the bottleneck is the data signal.
2. Installation is process is about the same, both require the blackberry desttop manager and install a desktop piece and phone piece. However for some reason TetherBarry is 11Mb and PdaNet is only 0.6Mb on the desktop part.

Now here is the part where I find PdaNet to be a much better software
1. PdaNet runs much more stable (I saw a lot of java.io.exceptions in TetherBarry and cann't connect a lot of times, not sure what they are about). Probably because PdaNet has existed for years.
2. I need to first run TetherBarry on the phone, then disable both my LAN and Wireless LAN adapter from computer before I can then launch TetherBarry to connect, then undo that afterwards. This is too much trouble. With PdaNet it is a one-click connection.
3. I like the fact that PdaNet shows you the bytes stuff, and the tray icon will indicate when you attach the phone, really nice.

Now here is the part I don't like TetherBarry: YOUR WEB SITE REQUIRES ME TO PAY BEFORE I CAN EVEN DOWNLOAD YOUR SOFTWARE!! AND IT IS EXPENSIVE!!! WHY DON'T YOU PROVIDE A TRIAL VERSION TO BEGIN WITH?

Anyway now it doesn't matter anymore...with PdaNet out (and at least I got to try it first), I will try to get my money back from the Tetherbarry folks and hope they honor the return policy (you said no question asked right?). Sorry but if I can get a much better software at $24, I have to do so.

By the way neither software works for my PPTP VPN. On the other hand TetherBarry supports 64 bit Vista and PdaNet does not have that yet but their website says it will be availabe in a few days.

Does PDANet use external servers or does everything run strictly through BIS?

Found a small mistake in your post. Tetherberry does not require blackberry desktop software to get working. I have never tried pdanet as I was under the assumption it only worked on windows mobile after reading your post I'm definitely gonna give it a shot before buying tetherberry.

I have TetherBerry installed on several machines, both 32- and 64-bit, running Vista, and Windows 7 and on NONE of them do I have to disable other network adapters. As long as they are not in use/connected, it always works fine for me, first time, every time. I can't comment on XP, but that is my experience with TetherBerry. I will probably still try PDAnet when they support 64-bit, but that can wait.

I think this is correct I remember reading that it would install DM if it wasn't already, though I don't believe it is the full install.

Now as far as the products go I beta tested tetherberry when it came out. Always worked no problem. I would buy it but money is tight so I thought I would try PDAnet to see how it compared.

The download went well for the computer and the phone. That is where the ease ended. Tried to thether to my laptop and the phone wiped itself. This happened twice. I am still waiting to hear back from PDAnet on the issue. The only bonus that came from this was that I upgraded from .75 to .109. We will see how that goes.

Ouch that's not good I have PDAnet installed on my phone and no problems but I'm going to uninstall to be safe. Update us if you hear back from PDAnet.

I gave PdaNet a try. Simple one click connection and I had internet access with a 2.4Mbps connection. However, I was not able to configure for VPN using cisco client UDP mode. For $29 this is a far better deal than tetherberry (now $59) if you do not need VPN. Hopefully they will add VPN connectivity in a future upgrade. If anybody has been able to sucessfully configure PdaNet manually for VPN, please reply.

What's your speed on Pdanet. When i make a test directly on my phone I get around 500kbits up and down and when i use pdanet i get 90kbits download and 230kbits upload. Do you think that TetherBerry would be faster?

My take on both Tetherberry and PDANet. I have used Tetherberry for a week and have now been using PDANet for 2 days. Both on XP. Both install easy. Both have similar speed (i.e., you don't lose anything on either).
Personally, I like PDANet for:

1) PDANet places in tray. Simple professional.
2) PDANet does not use servers

Will probably be staying with PDANet and keeping Tetherberry as a backup.

Always beware the advice of trolls.

There are plenty of threads with discussion of all the options.
