Ugh, that wouldn't be such a pain if the apps were all in one place. I'm gonna have to hunt all of them down again, but I suppose you're right. It's the only way to do it.

I was going great until installed App World last night. I went from just over 50MB at start up to a solid average of 54.5MB. 4 hours later I installed App World and memory plummeted by over 21MB within 90 minutes. I uninstalled it and after an initial leak down to 45MB, it has slowly climbed back to 50MB. So maybe App World leaves a footprint after being uninstalled?

Yeah, I'm taking the don't look don't care approach. I'm not going to look at my memory, and if my phone starts lagging and deleting calendar events, I'll battery pull. Maybe one day, the phone will have better memory management.

Well, I did another wipe and reinstalled .131 to get rid of whatever nastiness was left by App World. Guess what - memory fell by 4-5MB and seemed to say there. I did a couple of battery pulls as I've noticed things generally vary with and between different restarts and all was about the same. Third battery pull and I've gained over 1MB! This is what it was like first time round and before I installed App World. I don't get it and wish I hadn't started this, but it pi$$es me off when things don't
Work as they should. You can imagine how much love I have for Microsoft lol

IMHO this totally misses the point. A robust OS will manage any and all (including 3rd party ) apps effectively. If any app impairs the functioning of the overall platform that OS is simply not doing its job as well as it should be.

I am certainly no iPhone advocate, but I'm sure the average iPhone user loads their phone up with lots of apps (1 billion downloads so far) and yet never worries about having too many or if they are behaving badly.

One point to make though, is that the iPhone does not yet allow third party apps to work in the background, so they have a larger vice on memory control.

So do you keep using google maps or does just having it installed cause a leak?

I've been monitoring my memory (Meterberry at 15 min intervals) and it boots at 35MB. Last night it held strong at 28.2MB all night last night (midnight to 6AM while the phone was on the charger). It received a couple emails, etc. but got no human interaction. Throughout the day it has gone up/down and is hanging around 23MB. That seems pretty reasonable. Though I'd like to know why I lost 12MB in the last 12+ hours.

I've got a number of apps installed, but the only ones that run in the background is BeWeather and ScreenLock.

I call horsepucky on this... almost every OS I can think of has had memory management issues or has been susceptible to 3rd party apps that do a poor job taking and releasing memory. Otherwise, it would be the OS mfg that has to put out patches for games that cause memory leaks. The OSes provide the framework and rules which the 3rd party devs should abide by. Some do, some don't.

Well, a clean install and only Meterberry and Capture It installed I've gone from 52MB to 42MB after 4 hours. I must have been lucky with my initial run yesterday.

Conclusion: the OS leaks, 3rd party apps probably but not necessarily the sole leak. It will be interesting tf see how the memory holds up tomorrow. I'll let it run for a while with no reboots or new alps installed and see what happens

Default what is funny...

...to me,

is that everyone is talking like the only way for this device to run smooth is if there is 50+MB of free app mem.

That simply is not so. I have had mine drop below 1MB and it was operating fine. I usually start off around 38MB and it gets down to 15MB after some usage, but almost always returns to the low 30's and after a night of sitting in the cradle it is back to 35MB.

I also see that many people remove apps or do not use apps because they "leak memory", and that is just silly. The memory is there so that it can be used.

What good is app memory if you don't use it?

Also, what good is a blackberry Storm if you are so worried about app memory that you will not install useful or fun apps?

Good point madphone.

I find myself sometimes reluctant to keep something if it brings my app memory down under 50mb at start of day. I use quickpull. I have heard though that the phone bogs down below 20mb, I've also seen others confirm what you say.

Amen to that last part... I have tons of fun with my Storm. At first, I thought my battery life was getting worse with each new OS. Then, I realized that I was just using my phone more and more! Imagine that!

...my point.

This is designed to be a cross between the traditional business blackberry and a media device. If you ain't using it for that, you should think if getting something else.
