Default Will Javelin 8900 have some sort of extra fast EDGE connection to the web?

Can anyone clarify this point?

Is there some sort of new 'super EDGE' connection with the Javelin?

most new phones are optimized for faster edge service. not 3G speeds but not snail slow and not bad actually.

It isn't GPRS, which capped out under 100kb/s, EDGE is several times faster than GPRS and caps around 234kb/s

The Javelin and most other phones made in the last 3 years got EDGE Class 10, 236.8 kbps. Which makes it faster, now also, T-Mo is putting up and upgrading their antenas with the 3g switch which partly boosted speed up nationwide. People traveling to the 3g UMTS and HSPA frequencies free up bandwith as well.

Thus all in all you end up with decent speeds. I can do an average or 130s kb/s in the Chicagoland area, which for most things is good enough. UMTS does upper 300s and most HPSA 3.4 mb/s and even up to 7.4 on the HTC Touch Diamond, " " Pro, and " " HD devices.

Also it is HSCSD capable as per spec sheet, which can increase speeds ideally up to the higher 1.7 or so mb/s, but I am not sure if any US carrier has that capibility, most just run EDGE.

Hi,

want to clarify the Speed a little more Friendly that everyone know how fast is EDGE in theory. :-)

EDGE is in theory max.~234kbit/s, 8bit=1byte so its 29,25kB/s.

But the Speeds are in real little bit slower, because they need to accelerate.(sorry i hope you understand what i mean, i am from Germany)

So you mix up HSCSD(expansion from GSM) with HSDPA(UMTS, 3G).

For the Curve 8900 is EDGE important, which give us the fastest Speed with ~22kB/s in real. But i dont know how the net expansion with EDGE is in the USA, or may they count more on 3G Net.

Greets Chris

Edit:
I dont know from what extra super duper EDGE they talk. *g* EDGE is EDGE. :-)

now add wi-fi into that

and bang

you've got something that doesnt really need 3G

Like Chriz said up above......"EDGE is EDGE" - - there is no "Super" EDGE....

The cpu or processor on the 8900 is much faster than the Curve so you might see what looks like faster speeds just because the processor is faster, but in reality EDGE on an 8900 (over-the-air speed) will be no faster than a Curve.

I agree. EDGE is EDGE but the CPU may get stuff onto the screen a bit faster, as Dawg357 said, the transmission speed into the phone will be no faster than with a Curve. There may nonetheless be some improvement due to better optimisation of the receiver/transmitter chips/software and general protocol handling.

Not having 3G is, for me, an advantage. It means that my battery will last a heck of a lot longer.

The problem with EDGE is that it does not exist in many European countries, as they ditched the upgrade in favour for UMTS and later HSDPA.

So, if you're in Europe you'll most likely get GPRS which is about 3/4 times slower than EDGE.

In Switzerland I have EDGE all the time. Other countries seem to have very patchy EDGE. In the UK I mostly just get GSM and a lower signal strength too.

OK I get it now.

Faster device may mean faster page loading.

No 'new' EDGE.

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

I do pretty OK with EDGE here in the UK. I get it about 80 percent of the time. Network quality seems to suffer in poor weather.. I am looking forward to wifi!

Thanks again!

I noted that already.

As far as EDGE coverage goes in the US it is expanse as it is an expansion onto GPRS, i.e. EGPRS. Class 10 ideally as said 236 kb/s, and usually between 100kb/s up to 140kb/s. On T-Mobile with recent expansions you can have 130s kb/s in most major cities (as per speed tests of various people). Which translated to a decent net experience, especially on Opera Mini (which on WM devices can download natively too and increases d/l speeds a bit).
HSCSD on the other hand I am not sure that it has much if any coverage in the Sates since EDGE is much easier for carriers to maintain and set up it being a step up from GPRS (which delieverd in the 50s kb terribly slow). However if we had the coverage it would be more than enough - and would deliver Sprint Evdo speeds so anywhere from up to 400-700 kb/s - and faster ideally - thus realistically being up to four times faster than EDGE.

What can I say we lack in technological terms, well not in technological, but in implementing new technlogy (HSPA - which is already in the works of being replaced in several countries while the US is barely even up to optimal 3g standards aside perhaps from Verizons)

This WAP version of the forum loads nice and fast on my EDGE and BB browser but I do like Opera Mini for most things...

I suppose the size of the USA make widespread coverage difficult.
