While I do not put anything past AT&T and Verizon, I find this hard to believe. It is just too stupid, even for AT&T.

A buddy of mine just bought a Pearl and Curve for he and his wife in December and extended their contract 2 years. They dropped their land line so in house reception is critical to them. People like him would be completely screwed....under contract for 2 years and the level of service he signed up for is no longer available. I am no lawyer but this sounds like a class action lawsuit if true....that's why I cannot believe it.

I am all for ushering in new technology but there needs to be a bridge for your loyal customers to move forward.

you're not getting my point....
the article is speculation and none uf us have a clue if this will even happen
secondly my Bold uses the EDGE network so i dont know why you think it doesnt apply to me ....when i go out into the boonies(rare) i use the edge network ..when 3G is available i use that(most of the time)

the whole EDGE panic attack is kinda like the 2009 model of a car having less horsepower than the 2008 model and the automotive world having a panic attack...does that make the 2009 model of the car any less functional?NO

You have the ability to use 3G............... Let me edit my post, sorry. The point of this thread is AT&T screwing their customers with EDGE ONLY devices.

I still haven't heard anything in reference to this... even if the EDGE was being downgraded, you have GPRS, which honestly is about the same (GPRS = 2.5G and EDGE 2.75G). I'm not an expert at this, but I thought UMTS was backwards compatible and EDGE devices could be used on UMTS networks.

I'm fine with the change anyways... I can't stand anything less than 3g.

My take... better to trim that fat off now, lol.

Verizon will experience the same concerns when they switch to LTE. For T-mobile, AT&T, and other networks on GSM/HSPA it is more of an upgrade. For Verizon, Bell Mobility, KDDI of Japan, and China Telecom/Unicom, it will be like rebuilding from the ground up.

Maybe a discount for turning in a non 3G phone? Like the FCC is doing for the digital TV transition.

In the end, we do not know EXACTLY what will happen or how this will go down. We know that AT&T is pushing 3G and it looks like they're trying to take more steps toward that goal. If this were to happen over the course of 2 or 2.5 years, would you really be that upset? When AT&T starts removing all their EDGE only devices, then maybe there should be more cause for worry. Until these unknown times, I'm not too worried.

Hopefully it takes some time for the transition to go through especially since many users have recently purchased and are still still purchasing the 2G only devices. Now that I think back, I have noticed decreased services in some areas as of late but didn't really think much about it until now.

I went to an AT&T store to adjust my plan and i just figured that i would ask them if they knew of the EDGE thing and they said they never heard of anything. The girl even went to the back and looked it up on the web and they were shocked. lol

I also asked them about the 8900 and they havnt even heard of the phone. None of them had.

It is, what it is. If ATT wants to downgrade Edge, what can we really do about it?

I wonder if this has to to with them disabling of the 2g, 3G network selection in AT&T branded BB Bolds?
