how are apps updated with new features ?

Hi apple has nice features for managing application updates when new features are released for applications. How is this done with blackberry in the Appword as well as pre-app world ?? Is it "automatic" in that you deploy once to the store and users get notified or is it manual ? How are updates distributed to the user base ?
