If he is risk-averse, he can try releasing only on MobiHand, since that does not cost a pile of money. Mobihand sales will give tell you whether the app will sell respectably. If it does, he can then use that sale revenue to pay for the App World listing. My limited experience is that App World sales of my apps are about equal or better than MobiHand, but not spectacularly (e.g., order of magnitude) better. Still, with RIM pushing App World hard I expect sales in that market to improve over time.
