Default Round Robin: Help Dieter!

Hi Folks, back again and starting another Smartphone Round Robin! For those that are new to CrackBerry.com, the Smartphone Round Robin is when all the editors of the SPE sites literally SWAP PHONES for a week or two to see what life is like "on the other side."

You can find all sorts of information here (including details on how to WIN one of FIVE smartphones!):

http://roundrobin.smartphoneexperts.com

My first phone for the Round Robin is the BlackBerry Bold and boy, do I have questions!

1. My goal is to NOT have to sync anything over USB. Can somebody help me to sync:
- Google Contacts
- Google Calendar
- Remember The Milk ToDo

2. I used the "no password trick" to get IMAP set up in GMail. However, it doesn't appear that items marked as read on GMail end up marked as read on the Bold. Can I fix this?

3. I love streaming podcasts via Kinoma on Windows Mobile -- is there similar software on BlackBerry?

4. How do I re-assign the left and right convenience keys?

5. I recall there's an "Open App Switcher" in BBOS but I forget how to do it.

6. Can somebody give me the address of the engineer who managed to stuff this gorgeous screen into this small space? I want to send him a kiss.

7. In the Default "Precision" theme, is there any way to customize what shortucts are on the "minimized view"? I'm tired of trying to hunt down the SMS/MMS App

8. Speaking of SMS/MMS: Not threaded? Seriously?

9. Any shortcuts for quickly toggling WiFi?

10. Other Must-Have apps I should install?

1. Downloadin google snyc to sync the calendar
4. Go to Options, select screen/ keyboard and then scroll down and you'll see the option to change the keys
5. You can assign one of the convenience keys to do app switching. Mine is the left one.
7. The top row icons represent the shortcut icons on the home view. So move whatever icon to the top.

2. Mine do, it just takes some time. It's not immediate, but when I read on Gmail (Thunderbird or the web) or on my BB after awhile it will finally update one or the other but sometimes it doesn't either. But for me at least, it DOES do it... Sometimes...

5. Go to the main menu (where it shows all your icons) and hit the menu key (the BB logo) and you will see the option for "switch applications". This is your "task manager". Or, as RKU suggested, you can set it up to one of the two convenience keys.

7. The top row of icons in your main menu is what shows up on the home screen. Rearrange them by highlighting an icon and hitting the menu key. You will see the option to move right at the top. When you're done moving, click the trackball and it will drop the icon in place. I have mine setup to show my business gmail, personal gmail, bb messenger, SMS/MMS, browser and manage connections. I also rearrange my icons and tidy things away into folders when I don't use them much to clean up the menu screen. You can also hide icons and folders you don't use often or delete programs you don't need right from the menu.

8. They are semi-threaded. When you select a message from someone you are texting it will show all previous sent to and received from texts for that person, but they are not threaded on the main message screen.

9. This is why I have Manage Connections on my home screen. Just select the icon, uncheck WiFi and you are home free.

10. I only use Google Maps and Yellowpages (though it's slow and confusing to use ). Viigo (RSS reader/blog app) is good but tends to eat memory. And of course a few games to waste time on when you're not doing anything else

I used to be a WM guy (AT&T Blackjack, AT&T Tilt) but since I converted to BB I won't go back

aw crap -- I forgot the password I entered for the "Key Store Access," which I apparently need if I'm ever going to be able to Trust Certificates. Is there any way to reset that?

In Desktop Manager, go into Certificate Sync and choose Options. Then uncheck "Automatically Synchronise My Device's Certificate Data When My Device is Connected to the Computer." That should stop it from asking for the key store password.

Dieter,

first off you need to to turn off "dial from home screen"
this can be found in :messages-options-general options
this will turn on all short cuts like (R for reply, C for compose, L Reply All, or L for Calender in main screen etc look more of these shorts up)
to make a quick call hit the green key and start dialing or typing contact name or add frequent # to speed dial list for one button dialing.

then in the same general options screen in messages select "combined" for sms and email inbox
(all messages will be listed in same in box)
if you need to see sms only press alt+s in message screen and only sms will show.

program one of the convenience keys for "manage connections" to turn on wifi
this is done in options-screen keyboard

10. If you IM at all I would highly recommend BeeJive. It is a great all-in-one IMing app, and they have a 30-day free trial.

Durn -- Mac user here. Was hoping to not have to plug it in at ALL. I guess I could do a factory reset of the thing, just go back to Zero and start over. ....wait, you couldn't do that on a Curve 8300 series.. can you on the bold??

You can do a full wipe, options>security options>general settings>menu>wipe handheld

you could do that on the 83xx as well.

I would also checkout flycast. It's a downloadable program that gives you access to streaming radio.

i dont understand this Threaded sms issue...when i open a sms all the previous messages with that contact are all there. what do you mean by threaded?

DL qik for blackberry.... record video and upload at the same time
Qik | Share Live Video From Your Mobile Phone

wall st journal is a nice rss reader or viigo

Business News, Finance News, World, Political & Sports News from The Wall Street Journal - WSJ.com or Viigo

also "Q" will set profile to vibrate only for meeting etc hit it again to get backto normal profile

"k" will lock k/b

dont forget to use space key to scroll down in message or web

"T" for top of page
"B" for bottom

try Moodio TV for music streaming

Threaded SMS is more of a conversation, like a BBM conversation. The show previous option is pathetic, and the threaded SMS is pretty much the only thing i miss from my Treo, badly..
