So does Google Maps work or not? I'm about to get mine replaced, but have no problems cancelling instead if I have to pay to use the GPS feature..

GPS working? This is a simple RTFM issue. From the electronic manual I snagged from somewhere;

Get your GPS location
1. In the device options, click Advanced Options.
2. Click GPS.
3. Press the Menu key.
4. Click Refresh GPS.
The longitude and latitude coordinates for your current location appear.

(In UK you should get something in the range 51N-54N 001E-004W depending where you are)

If this works the GPS receiver is enabled and can see enough satellites. If Orange has simply blocked data service to provide maps you should be able to work around this with third party apps like Google. Take a look at the GPS message board here on CB for more advice.

Remember you might need to go outside for this, and it might take a few minutes to get a fix from cold start. You will probably NOT get enough GPS signal inside a building, and if your car has one of those nice metallic treated heat reflecting windows (like my C5 and some BMWs) the signal might not be good enough for driving. It might also be flaky in your pocket or if blocked by your body. Basically you need to see at least 4 satellites with a good spread across the sky, its no good if the visible SVs are all in one sector.

Ok, awesome, thanks both. I'm off to the shop now. I guess the next thing is to hope they've actually got one in stock I can take away

Thumbs down

I just got this from Orange UK:

Thank you for your reply regarding the Blackberry Maps service.

This programme is pre-installed on your Blackberry Bold device, however due to a software issue there is no 'icon' to enable you to launch the application. A software update is being worked on at present to resolve the issue, however we have no details as to when this will be available.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Software issue? You mean
"We tried to rip-off our customers and make them pay extra for what they could have for free, so we blocked the free maps and our programmers deleted the icon. Some customers embarrassed us about this on CrackBerry.com and it was hurting sales so we stopped blocking the free maps. We will promise to put the icon back. That's like every other Orange promise, not worth the paper we didn't write it on but it gets the b@stards off the phone."

I'm on Orange UK and initially had no BBmaps (OS 4.6.0.92?)...however, I updated my OS to 4.6.0.147, logged into the BIS website and resent my service books. Did this about 2 weeks ago and have had fully working BBMaps ever since...the icon just appeared, a compass with a part red pointy needle.

Not that this helps you in any way...sorry!

The actual GPS bit on the Bold does work great and I'm using TeleNav for my full blown GPS route planning...has traffic updates etc and offers a decent trial period.

Default missing icon on curve

hi everyone,
don't want to hijack this thread, as it's for bold, but I've also got a missing maps icon on my curve 8320.

Yes, I'm also on orange... but... it WAS there before - I've used it, and even had the icon on my home page. But today I noticed it was missing. I uninstalled it via DM and reinstalled it. Still not there. Under Options>Advanced Options>Applications it is listed as being installed. There is just no icon. It can't be Orange trying to con me, as it was installed, and I only noticed it missing today.

There must be another problem that people haven't considered.
