Default I am in Hong Kong, is there a way I can text message my girlfriend with Verizon?

Hello guys,

I am currently with a local HK carrier CSL, and I do have Yahoo messenger on my Bold for when she is on her laptop. But she is pretty much never on her laptop and just has her phone with her, and her phone cannot get apps like Yahoo or Google messenger etc. The only thing she can receive are text messages.

Is there a way I can send text messages to her from my phone in HK to her Verizon wireless phone for a reasonable cost? I know about Iskoot and Skype, but I don't think it can do that.

Thanks guys!

Simple. buy her an old curve and get a data plan for her. You can then use blackberry messenger (1000 times better than SMS) to talk to her whenever you want.

There should be a way as a buddy of mine sent me texts from when he was in India last year. I think it could be the same way as normal but you need to add the country code (like making a long distance call) into her phone number before sending the text.

Yes, email or sms to the @vtext.com address should work. She should be able to reply just like she would with any other SMS. Good luck. Just out of curiosity, since you mentioned it, why are you in Hong Kong?

Thanks a bunch for your help! I texted her on her Verizon phone and she got it! However, when she sends a text to me, is it considered international text? If I understand right Verizon charges $0.20 per text... that will not be good.

I work for a non-profit organization that serves the poor villages of China and it is based out of Hong Kong.

Thanks again for the help!

If you email her @vtext.com address from your email address, her reply would be to your email address and would not be counted as an international text.

To you they'll count as data. To her they'll count as SMS. Another thing you could do if you have IM (not sure if this works with Yahoo bc I don't use it) but have you tried adding her cell # to your buddy list? That way its a bit easier than email and all she has to do is reply.. It counts as SMS for her this way as well. +1xxxxxxxxxx is the format for adding her to AIM. That is if you have the IM app on your blackberry..

Another suggestion if you both use AIM:

She can sign onto AIM on her phone using the SMS version of AIM. That way it will be SMS for her and data for you.

There is an SMS version of AIM that i used to use. The IMs come in as SMS so it's not like the AIM app. You will see her screen name with a mobile phone next to it.

Instructions for her (works on any SMS capable phone):

To use the SMS Version of AIM:

1. Type a text message with your screen name space password

2. Send the text to 4646 (that is the short code to log in)When you get am IM it will arrive on your phone as a text message. With the SMS version you will hear your normal text message sound every time you get a text.

Tip: Once signed in send a blank text to 4653 to receive all the AIM TXT short codes!

Thanks again for the suggestions! It brought a smile to my face to see her text message from her phone across the sea.

If the SMS(the same thing as Verizon text messaging I'm guessing?) will not be counted as international, I think we'll be fine. I'm pretty sure she has a text messaging plan, I used to text her quite a bit when I was still with Verizon in the States.

I will look into the AIM thing.

Thank you again, I really appreciate the great help.
