Default Engineering Screen on Bold

I tried searching for information about the blackberry engineering screen (ALT+CAPS/SHIFT+H with dial from screen disabled), but couldn't find anything.
I'm kinda curious about :
- why does it become available when you have an unlocked/unbranded phone
- what exactly can it do
- possible tweaks to the os - like dimming the backlight to the keyboard/trackball
- more information on the whole thing

Thank you.

UPDATE:

1. The screen appears only on unbranded/unlocked phones.
On locked/branded phones it takes you to the Help Me ! menu.
2. You must have Dial from Screen Disabled
3. You can get a code for accessing the screen from ... check message #6 in this thread (didn't try this, already have access to it)
4. Apparently if you do something wrong and end up with a useless phone, upgrading/downgrading rewrites everything (needs confirmation)
5. In the OS Engineering Screen you can find some interesting information battery temp., at what speed is your processor currently running, etc.

Well, it took me to a screen. I have no idea what it does, but it looked cool.

False. Your phone has to be unbranded to access the engineering screen. Although, if you don't want to put your phone at risk. Use this code generator. It allows you to access the Engineering screen for a set amount of time.

The screen is called "Help Me!" You can't do anything with it unless you're unbranded though.
