Depend on your SP I hear some of them are crippling them to where you have to pay for them. My SP hasn't done that yet. Check to see if you are being charged.

Downloading maps uses data, regardless of your service provider. If you are going to use GPS a lot, you will want an unlimited data plan.

Google Maps is a free program that your GPS will work with. It may not show all the roads, and won't give you turn-by-turn voice navigation, but you can see where you are and the roads around you.

All GPS programs DO, however require the internet, which can rack up your Data useage very quickly.

Actually, there are some gps programs that do not require data.

Trekbuddy and another similar program do not require data.

I'd have to check but gpsed can log your trip and show a lot of info without using data - you do use data to upload your track to their website. What I'm not sure about is whether you can "process" the track to export to a file on the device avoiding data.
